2007 XREAS Replacement - Suspension Recommendation

Greetings all,

I have an '07 Limited 4WD with 191k and the XREAS shock system. The XREAS shocks are leaking and worn, so I'm looking to replace that setup. I'm running 255/70R18 Revo 2 tires, so they are slightly taller than stock.

I've been poring over the shock/spring options for several days trying to decide what's best for my needs. I often use a 500 lb rated cargo carrier and would like to retain the ability for light towing, such as an ATV.

From what I've researched thus far, it sounds like many are happy with the Bilstein 6112s up front. I'm not looking for much lift - maybe an inch or so just to give the taller tires a bit more clearance. I'm mostly on-road, but do use some rough logging roads at times that require 4WD.

If I go with 6112s up front, does anyone have a front/rear spring and rear shock recommendation for a low-lift setup that still allows for light towing? It sounds like the 5160s or 5100s may be best for the rear, but I am really unsure about what springs to use. Wheeler's tells me their lowest lift spring at 1.5" is only 10% stiffer than stock. Would that likely cause me trouble with the cargo carrier load or an ATV trailer? I would greatly appreciate your advice.

Can't give you much advice on the rears, since I'm running the stock rear air bags with my 5160s. However, if you buy the 6112s for the front, they include springs with them. You can set up the height with the snap rings on the shock bodies.
 
I had similar concerns. The hardware I ended up with was rear FJ springs and a bunch of "new to me" Tacoma TRD pieces. However, the best add-on for weight handling in the back was the set of Firestone Ride-Rite airbags. I like those over some of the other options mostly because the air line runs up through the bumpstop and along the frame rail to the location of your choice. Other brands/models run down through the spring perch and required drilling and letting a small fragile airline kind of beg to get snagged and damaged.

So far these bags have been pretty bulletproof. I run around with 10psi or so for just driving around unloaded. Once I pack the back with gear and add the kids, dog, and utility trailer I'll throw maybe 20psi in there to counteract any sag.

Thanks very much for the Ride-Rite suggestion! I hadn't thought of that and will research that further. That may be just what I need to counteract the towing sag.

Just checking - do you have the Coil Rite bags that fit inside the springs or another model? I'm not finding other Ride Rite bags that fit an '07 Limited 4WD.
 
I have a 2008 V8 and just removed the XREAS. I went with 6112's up front and 5160's w/OME 2895E's in the back. Wheeler's set me up. They did Clip 3 on Passenger and clip 5 on driver, up front, shim on driver rear coil. With this install I ended up with just barely over 2" in the front and a solid 2.5" in the rear. Too much rake for me, so Wheeler's suggested 1/4 front spacer on both sides to net me 2.5 in the front. The 6112's are awesome in the front much smoother over speed bumps and such. The rear is tighter than before. Today my shop is installing the spacers and extended sway bar links from Dobinsons in the rear, we are hoping that may free up the rear a bit.

As far as handling, half of my xreas had been replaced with new non xreas shocks by Toyate before I bought it, half was still connected and not leaking. Have not gotten alignment yet and it is twitchey....also seems to have more body roll than before, but not by much. The ride is excellent.

Thanks, Charlie! Just to be sure, when you say net - do you mean actual vehicle height gain or just at the suspension?

Yep....those are the ones. I did the install the same time as the FJ spring swap since they would be out anyway. It's a pretty easy procedure if you follow the instructions.
