That was not the only reason - just one. He said they are not worth the money.... i dont remember what else at the time but he was saying many things about them negatively. I cant remember cuz I really didnt care and I was getting a 4runner anyways!

I'll have to see one "in person" before rendering judgement, but I suspect that the Toyota folks have done their homework. While the current Highlander is a great vehicle, they are beginning to look a bit long in the tooth.
My girlfriend has an '02 with 93,000 miles on it, and it really doesn't look very different from the '07 model. They've changed the trim, tail lamps, and interior a bit; but the vehicle still has the same "tall Camry" look to it. She is really drawn towards the new RAV-4 and would want to get a 4-banger for better fuel economy.
As with other product lines, the new Highlander has apparently grown in size and heft - much like the people who buy them.

They then add though that the mpg remains virtually unchanged despite the gain in interior room, engine size and power and advanced safety systems.
Very interesting changes. Definitely their demographic for this vehicle has changed or just matured somewhat. No 4 cylinder and a much higher level of trim available.

I like the look of the Highlander and the new Rav.
Change is hard to accept sometimes when you used to something else.
As to someone's comment about the Sequoia looking like that as far as styling I think that would be a bad thing , its rivals all have a big truck look to them and Tahoe , Expy , ect... Plus the Sequoia has a Tundra look to them and basically is a Tundra SUV , if they follow that trend I will think they will have a good winner on their hands in the SUV market.
As far as the 4R , man I hope they dont go in that direction as far as looks or getting away from a truck based and truck looking SUV or I'll have to look at something else in the future.

I just saw a new Highlander sitting at a dealership. The dealership was closed, but I got a good look at the outside. I must say that I liked it much better in person than I did in any of the photos I've seen.
Motorweek did a review of the new Highlander last weekend. They are always very diplomatic in how they state things. They referred to the interior materials as being "utilitarian". I think that translates to lower quality. I heard that some people were disappointed with the interior materials used in the newest Avalon. I sure hope this isn't a trend with Toyota and cost cutting. I'll have to get in a new Highlander to judge for myself.

I haven't seen the Avalon, it's just a review I read somewhere.
I think for the price range, the 4Runner has top notch materials. I hope that stays consistent with the next generation.

I noticed a big ad campaign for the '08 Highlander appears to have been launched today on the net and I also noticed for the first time today that they have all the specs etc for building your '08 Highlander on the official Toyota site:

One odd point I noticed is it has the exact same wheelbase as the T4R at 109.8".
