2008 sport V8.......help decide

I'm finally in the workings of purchasing either a 2006 or 2008 4runner silver sport V8. The local dealer bought them at a auction in one of the southern states. I just have to make up my mind now, and soon. I'm committed to either one.

The 2008 Sport V8 Silver is in showroom condition, zero rust anywheres inside and out, underneath, there is none that I can find. It is has 14,780 miles on it and I have them down to $27K with my trade. The issue I have is on the carfax report it listed the vehicle in two accidents within 3mos apart. Both were just left side damage. I have looked it over and can't tell, it rides and handles perfectly. This comes with a 7yr, 100K miles warranty, and 1yr bumper to bumper and 2.9% 60mos financing, its toyota certified.

The 2006 Sport V8 silver, 68,780miles is in great condition, zero rust anywheres. They are down to $22 with my trade. The only issues being are cosmetic. The carpets are badly stained, the driver side seat has a small rip or abrasion, the center console near the shifter has a piece of paint rubbed off the silver plastic. This comes with no warranty and no special low interest, and is no toyota certified.

Please help me make a final decision so I can get some sleep....hahah. By the way I have to go through a dealer that will take my current car in trade. 4runners in great shape are tough to come by up here in northern vermont.

According to my fiance I have to drive this vehicle for the length of the loan at a minimum.....oh oh!

IMHO .... if you are satisified that the two accidents were minor and that they had no impact (no pun intended) other than cosmetic, I would opt for the '08. For me, the low miles, low interest rate and the warranty more than make up the $5K difference. But I can't comment on whether or not that's a good price ... I bought mine new in '06 and haven't looked at the prices since.
 
That's a tough call - I dunno how much your trade in is but 28K for a 2008 with 2 accidents is too high down here. So is $22k for a 2006 but it seems more reasonable. If the stains on the 2006 would be covered by Weathertech floor mats then I'd probably go with the 2006. 68K miles is nothing for a Toyota. You could buy a new seat cover (even an OEM one if it's that important) and still come out ahead.

I'm quite surprised they're putting a 4Runner that's had 2 documented accidents up as a Certified vehicle. With either vehicle I would probably recommend you have an independent shop do an inspection. Make sure they look for the cracked manifolds.
 
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that Toyota would not certify any used vehicle if it was in a known accident. My Tundra was not certified for that very reason and all it had replaced was the rear bumper.

That aside, I would go for the 2008!
 
The incidents are reported as follows (copied from Carfax)

1) Damage Report: Accident reported Involving right side impact
2) Damage Report:Accident reported Involving left side impact It hit another motor vehicle Left side primarily damaged

I will have to bring up to the dealership about the accidents and certified used. I will also have them check both for cracked manifolds. Thanks!
 
Also, you should take both VIN's to the Toyota Owners website and register them. It'll let you see all maintenance performed at Toyota Dealers. You may find things that aren't on the Carfax and you'll almost certainly find more detail for those that are on both.

MAYBE ... this is a great idea (I did this for a '02 I just purchased for my daughter based on jimithing's recommendation), but apparently not all dealerships participate in this. I watch the service advisor pull records up for the '02 on his system that still don't show up on the Toyota Owners website ... the same is true for my '04 Sequoia and '06 4Runner (which have been dealer serviced since day 1). Just saying don't panic if nothing (or only limited data) shows up ...
 
"Good things comes to those who wait" I think there is a lot of truth to that statement. What I'm trying to say is maybe neither option is good. Just wait for the next "perfect" 4runner. I looked around quite a few times and waited months before I got my 2006 V6 Limited Silver (the colour, year, condition, etc I wanted), which was almost perfect except for a $300 damage on the front but repaired. $300 damage is nothing, probably just a small scratch, so I went for it. I saw a few others before and was tempted to jump the gun, now I think back I'm so glad I waited.

If you plan to keep the car for a long time, then wait and look for the "perfect" 4runner or something that you will be happy with. From the sounds of it, you are iffy about both. My two cents worth, just wait until the next one comes along.
 
I'd lean towards the 08, because it has remarkably low miles. If you can't see any recognizable damage then I think you're good to go. I'd try and negotiate the price down a bit more since its been involved in 2 accidents. Not that it is a big deal, but that is probably your biggest bargaining chip. They know they are going to sell them either way, whether you buy them or not, so I'm sure they're not too concerned about it. But, I'm sure they'd rather flip those units faster rather than slower, so make an offer of $25 on the 08 and see where it gets you.
 
I've been searching for about 4-5months. 4runners in this great of shape are hard to come by. I'm leaning hard on the 2008 its only $80 more a month. I stop buying coffee in the am and make my own to make up for that added cost.

I have talked them down 1800 from asking price. I'm going to get them to through in some new cooper discoverer atrs or nokians all terrains.

Tomorrow I'm taking the 2008 for half a day then the 2006 to see which one I want. Thanks guys I'm really itching to make this deal. I don't feel to bad on the price about 1.5 yrs ago a guy at work bought a 03 limited with 80k miles and the V8 for $21K, it was a new england truck also. He has 120K miles on it now and its still runs like new. The front end it as tight as any new car off the lot.

I would call your insurance agent and see how much the diminished value of the vehicle is with 2 accidents. Then go back and present it to the dealer.
 
I just bought an Certified Pre-Owned '08 V8 SE 4Runner silver for $27.5k OTD and 67k miles, just for a comparison.
 
In August we got our C.P.O. 2008 SR5 4x4 with ~31,000 miles in immaculate condition for $24,700. And I got them to throw in floor mats and an extra key fob.
 
I paid 24 for my 06 Sport V8 last January. If the difference is price is not significant to you (in terms of making the monthly payment), which it doesn't seem to be, I would go with the 08. Its got barely any miles and has the warranty and the fact that you'll be able to squeeze a few extra years of driving out of it with the mileage difference in price.

I vote 08.

So this is only $2500 more with half the miles and its a sport. So I don't feel to bad. You have to remember they role over what they can take off the price of the vehicle on to my trade number, you know how they play that game. They won't give the actual trade value. Anyways if I didn't have the trade I could negotiate a lot more. The fact is #1 they don't want my trade (non of the dealers do) and #2 they are selling these 4runners as fast as they can get them.

I'm picking up the 2008 this am to test drive for the day. Getting anxious. Thanks everyone!
 
I have a 2008 Sport Edition V8. Got it for $26k with 42k miles on it. That price included the extended 100k-7yr warrantee. If i were you, id use that carfax report as leverage to get the warrantee for free. Ive gotten it 2x from Toyota, one was free due to a new Sequoia throwing VVTI codes due to cam springs.

I tried using as leverage. They are throwing in the 7yr, 100K mile powertrain warranty and 1yr bumper to bumper warranty. They way I am looking at it they probably rolled $1,000-$1,500 of what they would have taken off the 4runner into my trade number.
 
Go for the 2008! with the low mileage you are buying several years of payment free driving! That is cash.
