2008 SR5 HU replacement

Posted in wrong place prior so will try here:

2008 T4R with just the basic stereo. Single CD player, no bells and whistles that I can see. I don't know if this system even has an amp.

I would like to put a high quality sound system in with nav and blue tooth/iPod/hands-free capability.

I'm not looking to do a sub; I'd rather use existing enclosures and upgrade speakers. Are most speakers for vehicles interchangeable for a given size?

I looked at Crutchfield: Alpine, Pioneer etc for HU's

But I have another option:
There was a bit of mis-information on the dealer's part when I bought the vehicle so they are willing to sell factory equipment at cost to replace existing: so that would be the JBL Synthesis components: (HU, amp and speakers) but I don't know how much that would be. advantage is known compatibility with wiring harness, steering wheel controls and such. not sure if you get Blue-tooth though.


So, lot of questions. Anyone with thoughts I would really apreciate advice or your experience.

How much are you wanting to spend? I put a Scion Alpine Premium hu in mine,100% plug and play.There are a few companies that make aftermarket plug and play units that add nav,bluetooth and wifi among other options.The nicest thing is there isn't any wiring to do,everything works just like with the factory unit.I found a head unit for $200 and the nav for a little over $500.Here is a link to the Prodigy unit and there is at least 1 other comany that makes plug and play nav too. Thanks for reply. I'm ok with spending a couple thousand to do it right once. I would like the end result to look as much like stock as possible and blend in.

Does the Scion unit match 4Runner orange back lighting?

I don't think my system came with an amp but perhaps not needed if this Scion HU actually puts out the 50W/channel it claims in specs. (doesn't say if RMS or peak)

Could I swap out the interior trim parts for the rear cargo area from a junked limited to put in a "stock" sub enclosure ?

Looking for interior parts now if you have any suggestions.

The lights are very close to the 4Runner ,I will add a picture.If you can find a sub enclosure from a Limited,that would work.There is a write up on here where a guy installed a sub in the right rear in the storage compartment .He took a template and cut holes in a circle,it looked fantastic.I like all of the RCA pre outputs on the back of the Alpine,making it easy to add a sub.It's very easy to run cables from the head unit to the back of the truck if you use the channel along the inside of the door opening.
