2010 4Runner Limited vs 2010 Lexus RX AWD

?????????? Good grief. Other than the 20" wheels on the Limited, why wouldn't it be?

When you lock the center diff on a Limited, the front and rear axles turn at the same speed. When you put an SR5 in 4WD, the front and rear axles turn at the same speed. Explain the difference to me.

I don't see anyone other than yourself arguing that.

No, it doesn't. See:

2010 Lexus RX350 Review & Test Drive | Automotive Addicts

Additional note, AWD is also active on the RX when taking turns. Basically, the RX is designed where it applies power to the rear tire when you are in situations where the extra propulsion is useful. Otherwise, it is FWD.

:flamethrwoer2:

I'm not arguing... I'm trying to get a clear understanding of the value of the Limited vs an SR5. If you see that as something else, you're mistaken.
OK. So how about explaining this part of your post in more detail:

Because some seem to think the Limited is on-par with a Lexus RX
Who are these "some" people and why do they think the Limited is similar to the Lexus RX?

Do you think the 2010 4Runner SR5 is more capable offroad than the 2010 4Runner Limited? If so, why? Do you think that the 2010 4Runner SR5 is more capable offroad than the 2009 4Runner SR5? If so, why? If you think the 2009 SR5 and 2010 SR5 are about equally capable, then why do you think the 2010 Limited is different?

just to add to this:

There are three transmissions versions for the 4runner:

A343E--4 cylinder version
A750E--v6 2WD version
A750F--V6 4WD version

the A750F is mated to two versions of transfer cases:

VF4BM--electronic shift version (Limited)
VF2A--manual shift version

From what I can tell based on the pictures from the RM, the transfer cases are identical, the internals are similar. The manual shift version has the shifter on top connected to the shift forks whereas the electronic version has the shift control box mounted on the side connected to the shift forks. There is little more to it than this, but based on that, I can't imagine that there is anything making the trail/SR5 models better than the limited--with out getting into the KDSS.

Assuming you are on the TIS, there is an itty bitty differential in the VF4BM. It is kind of hard to find on the exploded view, but I was able to find it.

Here is a 3rd gen transfer case w/ diff.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what does the VF3AM and VF4BM have to do with each other in this comparison?

I was just using that search tool - and had a serious LOL reading Philsey's comment.

.... or .... just buy a CRV or RAV4 and have just as good a car and save some $$.

I had started this thread right before I purchased my 4Runner. At the time, my better half was leaning towards the RX and I needed some ammo to win the debate. Fortunately I did.

36K later - the Limited has performed exceptionally well and even with the stock Yokos - I've had a blast with it on some Level 1-3 trails in CO.

Dont understand what name of transfer case for 5-gen SR-5 / Trail - vers. 4runner? Is it same at 3-gen t4r?

It isn't exactly the same. The 3rd gen transfer case that I posted is basically a hybrid of the 2 different 5th gen cases. The 5th gen cases are either part time 4WD with no center diff (SR5, TE) or they are full time 4WD with a center diff but no 2WD option. The 3Rd gen case does it all.

haha somehow this thread popped up in a search. there's a lot of lexus rx350 bashing here. I have a 2010 RX and 2012 4runner so I have spent much time in both and I will say an older RX is probably one of the best used vehicle buys right now. they are quick, very capable in bad weather and built so well and have good storage capabilities (I do have the sport package which has larger rims and a different suspension tuning). a lot of people dismiss them but they are great vehicles. Yes the GX is bigger and more akin to a 4runner but those are ridiculously expensive. RX 350 hands down is one of the best uses of cash right now for a luxury and decently capable vehicle

My 2010 does have a manual differential lock though. manual states it sends 5050 power to front and rear, basically the same as H4L in the 4runner if I'm understanding correctly. the RX has done everything the 4runner has done and we get some pretty nasty snow up here. for a 2010, I find the AWD system to works very well, I have never needed the diff lock or have gotten stuck. obviously I'm not out wheeling with it.
