Well, I would say that unless you can feel for yourself that the steering rack needs to be replaced, then it probably doesn't.
Tie rods, bearings, joints can all go and give symptoms(noise, vibrations, etc), but if your steering rack goes kaput, or you damage it, you're definitely going to notice while driving.
Unless you'd noticed symptoms prior to your service visit, I'd have to say wtf on this one.

Yeah no symtomps at all. They said that it is currently at "Stage 3 level leak", on their scale from 1-5. So service advisor said I'm ok for now but need to do it soon.

Do you take your toyota to a BMW dealer for maintenance? 3,000 for that, no way. Vey rare to have a steering rack go bad its a simple component. Usually they leak from the outer seals. Inner and outer tie rods ends are serviceable. :faint: I don't know I don't know

If the steering rack were shot, it's an expensive thing to replace. The Rack itself would run ~$850(estimate from the $1300 it cost here in Canada), but it's the labor that kills ya. Unless you know someone who can do it without lifting the engine. Most shops up here quote $3K+ CDN for this procedure.

Would agree that $3K+ USD sounds high, and I'm not exactly sure why a leak would mean replacement of the entire rack though.

I'll talk to my mechanic, see what he says. What upsets me is that, my father in law drives his mercury villager for over 19 yrs and only had oil changes. Everything on that thing is original.
What's up Toyota???
