What symptoms led to the diagnosis of replacing the steering rack?
Well, I would say that unless you can feel for yourself that the steering rack needs to be replaced, then it probably doesn't.
Tie rods, bearings, joints can all go and give symptoms(noise, vibrations, etc), but if your steering rack goes kaput, or you damage it, you're definitely going to notice while driving.
Unless you'd noticed symptoms prior to your service visit, I'd have to say wtf on this one.
Do you take your toyota to a BMW dealer for maintenance? 3,000 for that, no way. Vey rare to have a steering rack go bad its a simple component. Usually they leak from the outer seals. Inner and outer tie rods ends are serviceable. :faint: I don't know I don't know
If the steering rack were shot, it's an expensive thing to replace. The Rack itself would run ~$850(estimate from the $1300 it cost here in Canada), but it's the labor that kills ya. Unless you know someone who can do it without lifting the engine. Most shops up here quote $3K+ CDN for this procedure.
Would agree that $3K+ USD sounds high, and I'm not exactly sure why a leak would mean replacement of the entire rack though.
Sounds like your mechanic or service writer has a boat payment to make. Have you personally observed this leak? Pics?I just went for an oil change and they found it during inspection.
