Was at the dealership tonight looking at an 09 v6 and speaking with the sales managers, they mensioned that Toyota just announced they are coming out with a new V6 for the 2010 4Runner which - per them will deliver more torque and hp than the current V8. Said the V8 will be discontinued in the 4 runner. Anyone hear anything like that? See a bunch of body posts - but this is the first I've heard of a higher output v6 for the 4r????

Sounds interesting. You may be the first to have heard that one. I guess if they cancel the V8 for 2010, a higher output V6 with good torque would be fine. In the next week or so I will contact my local Toyota dealer sales mgr whom i know fairly well and see what he has heard. Last time we spoke(late Feb) he had not heard much at all so maybe things have changed since.

Thanks for posting.

If I recall when i awaited the announcement of the 2003 redesign, no info made it out until maybe June/July of 2002. If that holds true this time around, we may have to wait only another few months.

thats old news, i posted that a long time ago- my friend is a traveing technician trainer for toyota and he also said no new body style is n the works

I see an old post of your's about putting a 4banger from a Venza or something in the 4Runner that will do more than what the v6 does today - but not about a new v6 that will obsolete the v8? Did your bud get you any specs on the new V6?

My friend, a General Manager here in Denver actually saw the 2010 4Runner in Los Angeles with the new 4.6 V8 late in 2009.

As to what's going to be released re: 2010 model or even 2011, based on the very slow release of 2009 model year 4Runners that are just now barely showing up in Denver... everything is pure speculation as to the future designs, equipment and release dates.

Toyota just came through as many know, the first loss in over fifty plus years and their production was drastically cut to keep already over-swelling inventories from getting larger.

I do sense one thing... Toyota is definitely moving towards smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient and hybrid designs. The U.S. Govt under Obama is beginning to get tougher on future vehicle MPG's and what was accepted re: 15-18mpg in an SUV in the past, most probably will no longer 'make the cut' as far as our gov't and Toyota.

With that said, if you truly enjoy the V8, as I do, enjoy it now because, 'times they are a-changing'. ;):

I just had a meeting with the General Manager of one of the largest Toyota dealerships.

He said that the 2010 new design 4.6 liter V8 4Runner will be sent to dealerships beginning in August 2009.

Toyota is now down to a little over 100 day inventory... which is historically HIGH for them, about what the domestics used to have when they 'were in trouble'.

I was in his office when he showed me an online (current) screen of a regional auto auction and a 2006 Sport V8 4Runner with 23K miles selling at wholesale for $24,600

Yes, used cars prices have risen considerably, especially SUV's since gas prices have dropped.

I test drove a 2008 Tacoma TRD with 18K miles, V6 engine/auto tranny and honestly, was unimpressed at both the V6 engine and the overall Tacoma drive experience.

I'm going to wait for the 2010 V8 4Runner to be released before I decide to either trade in my 2007 V8 Sport 4Runner and buy a 2010 V8 or extend my warranty at the quoted/matched price of $835.00 7 year/ 100K/ no deductible.

climb14er,

If that holds true, great news afterall! I was hoping all along the 4.6L V8 makes it in and maybe the 6spd tranny too:D

Did your source happen to mention any timeframe as to when the public may see more specs or photos perhaps?

Thanks!

So is this a new designed engine or 4runner?

That vehicle wasn't worth that much once it first drove off the lot the first day. Anyone would be a fool to pay that much for a three year old vehicle.

"Selling" price and "sold" price are not the same thing.

The General Manager said he'd call me when the specs and photos get released and he's thinking that the 4Runner would arrive around the August release time frame.

Personally, with all that the auto industry has gone through, if August holds, I will be impressed.

Re: the sold and selling price that was alluded to in another reply to my post, I see the auctions all the time as I'm in the business. Prices for used vehicles have risen due to increased demand as people's credit history has been impacted especially for new car purchases and for SUV's with fuel prices lower than last year.

I was quoted for me personally a net-net net price for the new Tacoma Pickup I inquired about but passed on it as I thought the quality of the PU and the V6 engine left a lot to be desired. Am definitely looking forward to seeing the new design 4Runner and driving the new 4.6 liter V8.

That looks way too similar to the current one. For SURE the 10 will come out Aug or Sept according to Toyota finance. They have not seen the design of it either but they are sure about it

Wow, so the 4Runner is getting:

New sporty styling that returns to its roots (sounds like it may be a bit retro styled)

More ground clearance

A 268HP V6

More headroom

Off-road options: Crawl Control, Multi-terrain assist, KDSS, Active Traction Control

Sounds like a winner to me. Can't wait to see what it looks like!!!

I just wish they would publish the transmission choices so I can decide what to do. I don't want to find a nice 3rd gen that's manual and get it only to find out that they reintroduce the manual in the 2010 4Runner. I don't care if it's the 4-cylinder model or V6, I just want the damn manual transmission back.

I would like to think it will come back. IF the 4runner is getting back to its roots with a more rugged look and more head room (aka: FJ Cruiser style) then it would be easy to do. the same engine (V6) is in the manual taco and the manual FJ. We can all hope.

That's what I'm hoping for, but not sure if it'll happen or not, cause the current FJ and Taco use the same engine as the current V6 4Runner I believe, yet still no manual for the 4Runner. It's almost like Toyota's telling us that if we want a manual 4X4, go buy the Taco of FJ instead. Unfortunately, I want an SUV and not a truck and I dislike the FJ for various reasons.
