2010 SR5 4HI to 4Lo problem

When I try to Shift from 4Hi to 4Lo, while in neutral, as I shift out of 4Hi it grinds as I get to 4Lo. Try to shift into 4Hi and it grinds. The only way I can get it into 4Lo is to shut it off, shift it into 4Lo, and restart the engine.

What should I do to figure it out and fix it???

Totally Stopped. If I push harder on the lever I am afraid that I will damage the gears. I do not want to damage the gears.

Are you slowly shifting? That will grind. Quickly pull/push the lever from high to low or back. It will grind if you let it spool down in between high and low (which I don't understand but it does).

Push the lever harder, faster (that's what she said). There is a neutral position between 4hi and 4lo that you want to skip over.

If the transfer case oil is cold it could make it grind a little. It should not make any noise if it is warmed up after driving.

Mine makes noise as well going from hi to lo if you aren't deliberate in your change. The mechanical drag will allow the magic inside the transmission to spin the output shaft while the transfer case is in neutral. The noise you hear is the gears trying to mesh and lock in.

The dial type in my SR5 never grinds, a little clunk and the shift to LO is nearly instant.
