I believe the oem lines are Kevlar reinforced, which means your paying for bling no one will ever see... Under that shiny ss braid is the same black Kevlar reinforced hose.
 
I just ordered a set of front and rear extended lines from all-pro, made bu crown performance which has a good reputation. I need extended hoses in the rear for the coils I'm running. In my experience replacing the long hoses that run from frame to axle can make a significant improvement in pedal feel, especially when working with extended lengths. To each their own though.
 
I'd call to ask for the right part#.

Are these them? Not sure if it matters, but they are indicated for a 4th Gen 4Runner.

Yup, I believe 5th gen is the same as for both the 4th gen and fj cruiser. Here is the link for the fj ones. Again, call to confirm and they will get it straightened out. I believe the rear hoses are 6" longer than factory, not sure about the fronts.

I also called and spoke with Crown directly cause ideally I wanted 4" extended rears. They don't have an application for the 2016 yet and wanted me to confirm that the fittings were the same before ordering. I just decided to go through all-pro cause I've done business with them before and have always been happy.

I'll be mounting all-pro's 3.5" rear coils once my bumpers are done. I opted for those cause I wanted to maintain a slight factory rake without being overly stiff. I've heard they may be a little soft but it seemed like the best option. Radflo is building me some rear shocks that they originally designed for OW's 3" coils so hopefully I'll gain a little more downtravel as well.

I'll probably throw the new hoses on this week so I can report back on fitment.
 
What's the point of these? Is this for a bracket lift? Normal lifts have no change in brake line length up front because there's no change in geometry or range of motion. Just a different static ride height. Over stock length up front is a strange concept to me for non-bracket lifts. Since there's no added distance between the caliper and frame bracket, you're just using the wrong length. The aramid (kevlar) fibers have about 10 times the tensile strength and takes ~100% of the pressure load. The stainless part is just for looks - and probably makes the brakes very marginally poorer in performance by insulating the hose and keeping slightly higher line temps. The longer length where there's no utility means more flex in the hose and worse braking performance.

What am I missing? Why would you go out of your way to downgrade the brakes?

Email Toyota and ask them... I'd type here that I asked them this very question via email (because I was curious and considering SS lines myself) and got the response above but no one will believe me anyway so the easiest way to satisfy your questions is to ask them yourself.

Let's be honest, very few current manufacturers do not use some sort of reinforced brake line. (especially in towing and performance car applications). Sure, on a corolla or yaris or camry I think they're not reinforced but some sort of composite material less prone to dryrot and expansion under pressure, but not reinforced per say.... but on anything that is built to tow or go fast it's due diligence to not cut corners with the brake system's performance or reliability and has found it's way into standard design practice of many manufacturers.

Well, my reason for them was pretty straightforward, out in back with 3.5" coils the factory hoses are getting pretty short, these are longer.. The need for extending hoses would be application specific.

You're right about the fronts. I'll be running a relatively "standard" 2.5" lift so don't need them, but I ordered them out of precaution in case (a) I wasn't happy with the pedal feel after swapping out just one set of hoses, and (b) it sets me up for long travel down the road without the need to keep messing with the fittings.

Now for what it's worth I've heard the strength argument for rubber vs ss before. When I lifted my last jeep I had extended rubber hoses made, being told the same thing by the manufacturer that there wouldn't be any difference in pedal feel. Braking with those felt like having a baloon under the pedal, that's the best way to describe it. I exchanged them for ss braided and pedal feel improved dramatically. Now how toyota's current hoses compare to the rubber ones I had made in the past I don't know, but I could call the shop to find out. In general I'm not reccomending people start "fixing things that aint broke", but in my case necessity and experience have indicated extended ss hoses. Hope that makes sense.
 
i'm curious as to how it feels when you change them out. i've had them on previous toyota's in the past granted they were about 10 years older. and they significantly helped pedal pressure/feel.

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds reasonable. I've done extended brake lines a few times on solid axle because of the same reasons. Using brake lines as limiting straps is generally a bad idea! If you're doing it, might as well do it right. Stainless sheathing seems reasonable for durability if you have potential wear spots or exposure to sticks and rocks. I almost always use stainless fasteners for all may aftermarket stuff if it's strong enough for the application because I don't like rust - but I'm always careful because stainless is relatively weak. It's used as a selling point for pressure containment by the manufacturers, but I don't think it's a very good material for that purpose. It's good for a lot of other reasons though.

Just had them installed today, front and rear. Definitely firmed up the pedal feel, however it's not totally apples to apples cause I also just installed a front plate bumper and winch so my truck is rocking like a 90's Lincoln on the freeway.. but still on an hour commute home the difference is noticeable, especially at lower speeds. I wouldn't say it's worth the upgrade alone, but if you're going long travel the ss hoses wouldn't be a downgrade. Hope that helps.

So for extended travel in the front are the SS extended brake lines still not required?

I have heard that the 2010-2013 models have different lines than the +14 models and their braking feels "firm" compared to the squishy feeling my 10 has.

Are the lines the same and does swapping change the feel? I never saw a follow up post resolving that question.
