Status of Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Roller-rocker Supercharger for 2010 – current 4Runner and FJ Cruiser Applications

The original launch of the Roller-rocker Supercharger was targeted for October, 2012. However, the efforts to continuously improve product quality have caused several delays to reconfigure the design. These design revisions will improve performance and durability; however, there will be more time required to complete a new series of durability and emissions testing, along with an on-dynamometer calibration process.
Tooling for development of this next generation Roller-rocker Supercharger for 4Runner and FJ Cruiser applications is underway, and revised prototypes are expected to be running this summer. The estimated launch for this product is now January, 2014.
 
I followed the link [MENTION=55815]Okki[/MENTION] posted to the FJC forum, and found another link to this: It was probably posted on T4R, but I don't remember it. (Bear in mind this was 9/2012, but I'll bet the end result will be very similar).

"I compiled a list of questions from FJ owners about the new supercharger coming out. because I am in contact with the TRD Product Informatuion manager over at Toyota, I was able to send them over and get some answers 'straight from the horses mouth'.

Here is the full Q&A for your enjoyment!

Supercharger Questions

Paperwork questions:
What will the price for the unit and all parts for install be?
A: Pricing has not been finalized, but the MSRP should be within the range of the current products – between $4000 and $5,300

What will the suggested price for installation be at the dealership (what can we expect to be charged in order to maintain warranty)?
A: Installation labor should not differ greatly from current requirements, so it is anticipated that the new supercharger will cost approximately the same charge for labor.

In what way does it affect the warranty if any? Powertrain warranty?
A: The Toyota warranty is in effect if the dealer installs the unit. There is no impact on the vehicle’s powertrain warranty.
If we have a private party install, how does that affect warranty?
A: Warranty for a non-dealership installation reverts to the standard Toyota parts warranty – 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Curious:
What can the current delay be attributed too?
A: Limited engineering resources have impacted product development for Toyota in many areas. The priority for the development of this supercharger was changed on three different occasions, each in response to a need to shift resources to other higher-priority assignments. Final testing is currently under way on prototype units, and the release of this product to the marketplace is anticipated summer 2013.

Specs:
Projected horsepower:
A: The current target in the vicinity of 330+ hp. An SAE J134 power test will be conducted once the contents are finalized to verify actual data.

Projected Torque:
A: The current target is in the vicinity of 335+ ft. lb. An SAE J1349 power test will be conducted on the supercharger to verify actual output.

Projected MPG gain or loss:
A: Negligible – no impact is anticipated

Will the supercharger require the TRD intake, or can be used with other aftermarket intakes (K&N for example).
A: It has been developed for use with the OE air intake, as well as the TRD performance air intake; use of any other intake may negatively impact the performance of the supercharger and lead to premature failure of the components.

Fuel Requirement:
A: The supercharger will require use of Premium Unleaded Gasoline, minimum 91 octane.

Technical questions:
Does it use the stock injectors? If not, what will it use?
A: The kit configuration is not currently finalized: the supercharger may require a higher flow injector, included with the kit. (It has already been determined that no fuel pump change will be required.)

Will there be any timing gear set kits that advance the timing similar to URD?
A: No. The calibration reflash required as part of the installation adjusts the necessary timing. It will be emissions legal in all 50 states.

Are any parts that might be put under strain included in the warranty, like a clutch?
A: No additional warranty or adjustment is provided on any of parts– the entire power train is covered under the full factory warranty.

Is the Eaton TVS R1320 being utilized for the application?
A: Yes. TVS rotor pack Generation VI R1320. For more technical details/specifications, please go to the Eaton website.

Wear and tear questions:
What is the impact on overall lifetime of engine?
Do you anticipate any problems at all with the extra torque and power for the ATX or manual transmissions?
Any other parts that should fail earlier?

A: The vehicle’s full factory warranty proves that Toyota will stand behind the durability of all of the vehicle’s components after the supercharger has been installed.

Can you tell us 3 things we didn’t ask that you really think we should know?
1. The supercharger will bring positive changes to the towing capability and overall engine performance of the vehicle.

2. The supercharger is a product of some of the most advanced rotor pack technology available on the market today.

3. The intercooler being used on this new supercharger operates with the unit from the 5.7 Liter V-8, which will provide additional cooling for high-load applications, such as towing."

Wonder if the re-flashed ECU will have a more responsive/aggressive throttle response - or if they are trying to keep the MPG in check (as suggested above) and will still require punching the accelerator to the floor to get the motor to "wake up"? Wonder if the ECU flash will affect the tranny's behavior at all?

If it does pan out to be 330+ HP, I'll probably still shoot for this in early 2014...

They are tuning for rich side of peak in both power and fuel curves. The larger injectors will accommodate the higher lb/hr needed at each nozzle for the A/F ratio to be ok. They'll run rich of stoich of course...

They won't run aggressive timing because of the cylinder pressure. Something about not wanting to run over the shiny parts of your engine comes to mind.

As I understand it, the problems have been getting heat out of the charged air effectively (intercooler) and being able to test the other areas of concern with the kit (valve train, etc).

I'm sure this will be a great kit once it is released...

I emailed Gadget and he said that his s/c is ready for production but toyota is blocking his access to the ECU connectors
 
Wonder why no twin turbocharger

My guess? Because it would require more modifications, be more expensive, and is more interesting to tune than this setup. For example, a single turbo would need a crossover from one manifold to the other to feed the turbo with exhaust gases. Twin turbos, usually, have one turbo and one exhaust pipe for each. Two turbos are typically about reducing turbo "lag" or "spool up", not necessarily making more power. Also, the rapid onset of torque with twin turbos may require drivetrain and suspension modifications that are not practical on a 4Runner. I've seen many cars make big HP, but a turbo car can put torque down quickly to the ground. I've got several printouts from my old car that say "Exceeded mechanical limits" because it was making ~ 900 lb/ft of torque, and it came on so fast the dyno couldn't measure it. Do that with the transmission setup on a 4Runner, and you are likely to end up driving over some shiny parts that are expensive.

You want a smooth application of power throughout the powerband wherever possible. Burnouts look cool but they are counter productive. It would also be damn hard to keep the VSC system from fighting you whenever you mash the accelerator. :)

A connector? I call BS.

Why won't they release ANY info about his s/c if it is ready for production? If it is ready, then they should be singing from the rooftops about it's greatness.

I feel like an abuse victim that keeps coming back for more and more. I check this damn thread every time it gets bumped. Shame on me. :smashputer:

Following the production of this 5th Gen S/C has been series of failed promises, followed by vague details, then more failed promises.
 
I have been so spoiled with my supercharged 3rd gen. I just test drove a 2013 Trail and am completely unimpressed with the power.
I cannot believe the truck is so sluggish up to about 4K rpm.
I am in a serious dilemma with the new vehicle purchase. I may not want to pull the trigger until I hear that a 5th Gen S/C is available.
The truck feels like a pig with out it. That should not be the case with 275 hp.
