2010+ TRD Supercharger

So it has its own SKU. Still a lot of questions. Since 2014 isn't listed, makes me wonder how stale this is. I have to say though, it's encouraging! :pray2:


They completely redid the whole TRD site about 3-4 months ago, so I don't think this is any older than that.

Plus I went through a ton SKUs about 2 months ago, can't say for sure I ran this one but almost certain I did. Wasn't listed then.
 
This looks promising. I only hope the years listed is a typo, no LTD 4wd only 2wd WTF??? Also it says in the notes, "proof of ownership maybe required", does that mean they wouldn't install on one that is still under finance?
 
Yeah, the CARB document indicates 2010-2014 and is signed on Nov 6, 2013.

The '03-'09 S/C uses the M90 (1475 cc displacement) with 455 cc/min injectors.
The '10+ S/C uses the TVS 1320 (1320 cc displacement) with 455 cc/min injectors.

You can compare the two maps and see the TVS 1320 has a higher efficiency (73% vs 62%) and has peak efficiency at a higher pressure ratio (~1.65 vs ~1.4). That'll result in cooler discharge temperatures.

I think it maybe a typo. If you click the SERVICE REPLACEMENT PARTS, for example, TRD SC HEAD UNIT ASSEMBLY, then click COMPATIBLE VEHICLES, it shows all 4Runners from 2010 down to 2013.

Anyways, great news!

I hope this thing happens, but one thing that would concern me a tad is that you are stuck with the tune they give you. There are no aftermarket tuning capabilities for the Toyota ECU that I know of.

I've done a few aftermarket FI kits and I've never seen an in the box tune that is very usable, but then again all my previous experience was attempting to make well north of 500hp on electronics that were not originally designed for that much airflow . If the MAF is capable of reading the airflow for ~350hp it might be just fine. Even the stock fuel pump can probably keep up with mid 300 fly wheel hp.

I'm already thinking this may be in my future. I'm such a sucker for power adders.

Toyota/carb approved the 2010-2014 for bolt on post sale because of the fact it's to late for toyota to add a factory supercharger for the 2014 model year and then 2015 and up could be approved for both ? . Of course just guessing and just happy to see some news this subject. It does appear we're getting close.

If Toyota ends up releasing this for the 4R application, it will be very conservative. It definitely won't be a max HP scenario, but it will achieve a different goal entirely. It will be reliable and safe (and still provide a noticeable amount of extra umph) - reliable enough to warranty for some limited time most likely.
 
Update.

Just got back from the Summit. A TRD Engineering Manager reported that the latest evolution of the 2010+ supercharger was undergoing dyno testing right now. The previous calibration did not pass the 100 hour full power dyno run (it slightly scuffed a bearing in the engine).
He stated that if this calibration passed the test, the supercharger would be available as early as late this year to early 2015. He also stated that if this latest calibration did not pass the test, the supercharger would likely never be available.
 
A supercharger would be nice, especially with a factory warranty. As long as it doesn't affect reliability. I just traded a boosted vehicle for my new TE. The power was nice but the lack of reliability started to suck, even with a warranty. If it gets released, I think I'll wait a while and let others be the guinea pigs.

They also said that the R&D cost on the newer versions of superchargers (not just this one) has skyrocketed due to so may hoops to jump through. I took away from our conversation that TRD is on the verge of dropping the SCs from production in the future.


After spending the last 3 weeks in the mountain I need to go pick up a V8 again or I'm going to have to save up to buy two of the superchargers.

I agree, waitng a while to see how the unit performs would be the smart thing.

4 days straight at full power? That's pretty badass.

You would be amazed at what the factory's put vehicles through before they go out to the public. I laugh at the posts "omg I slightly turned on pavement with 4wheel drive engaged! Did I destroy my drivetrain?" Posts.

A bunch of years ago I watched a documentary on the making of the Harley V-Rod. While not a fan of Harley's (engine was designed by Porsche) the documentary was really interesting. During Engine development Porsche does a similar test where they put the engine on a dyno, run it full throttle and load the dyno to simulate something like a 15% grade. They run it for some ridiculous amount of time, tear the engine down and if they see anything out of the ordinary they go back and redesign that particular part. During the cooling test they had test riders ride around some oval track in the desert (100+ degrees). They would ride the track for an hour then stick the bike in a tin shed close the door and leave the bike idling in the shed for an hour. They would do this all day.
