2010+ TRD Supercharger

arrrgghhhh!!! i'm still pining for my old 06' 4runner V8.... I miss the power the 2015 v6 just is a slug in comparison.

I saw my old 06' on the road last week. grrrrr... should have kept it.. Don't get me wrong the new one has great swag and has a place, but the v8 and xreas are missed something fierce.

Somebody sack up and swap in the 5.7 already. I don't think a SC is ever gonna happen.

That would be awesome but it is a huge endeavor... There is a member on fjcruiserforums that is close but continues to run into speed bumps. Would be easier to slap the 4Runner body onto the sequoia platform. Of course the question then is why?

It's probably more cost effective to either custom turbo or swap an older URD built and supercharged 1gr in with an 07 FJ ecu with UCON management. Or... just get a sequoia and supercharge it.

Ultimately I bought my 4runner for its practicality and reliability. I will probably pursue a small custom turbo at some point. Just need a reliable, ideally plug and play tuning source first. There is a member on fjcruiserforums that has done a custom turbo on his 2013 FJ... Just hasn't worked out the tuning for it yet. If something doesn't come out within the next year, I will probably go the supercharged sequoia route or God forbid... get a jeep srt.

Curious, as I don't keep up with Gadget or toyota120.com, but anybody speak with him regularly? Saw this post today in a google search dated today:

Toyota 120 Platforms Forum - View Single Post - Gadget's Build Thread

"URD is the importing distributor for Rotrex in North America for Toyota/Lexus applications.

We also make supercharger kits using the Rotrex.

For the new 1GR engine we went a different direction and developed a prototype using a 2.3L Whipple compressor. The truck runs fantastic and has a lot of miles on it. The only thing holding up the release of the kit is getting access to one last ECU connector for our UCON-EMS.

G"

Is there still hope URD might actually release this????

Man o' man I've wanted a supercharger ever since my old T100 days back when I couldn't come close to affording one... The wife would be thrilled with this purchase lol

How do they (URD or TRD for that matter) handle the ECU Re-mapping on our trucks? IIRC, the 5VZFE TRD Supercharger could "get by" with the 7th injector on the stock ECU Tune.

I'm curious since they apparently have some way to address this, if they would ever consider a CAI/Header/Exhaust package with an appropriate ECU re-tune? Or even just a more aggressive tune on the stock setup? Would this also address transmission behavior?

I also have to assume that the strangely absent connector is likely directly related to the ECU, so probably not...

It would be nice to see this surface, but seeming less and less likely with our Dual VVTi's likely nearing EOL...

If you go to the thread that be77solo linked to, you'll find this post from Gadget which talks about the UCON-EMS which
URD said:
is an advanced engine controller with self tuning capability that works in parallel with the stock ECU. It can take full control of the engine management needs and while doing so feedback false signals to the stock ECU so it will think it is still running the engine. This leaves all the OBD diagnostics in place and all the secondary systems work properly.
URD needs the ECU connector to interface with the ECU, but doesn't have to 'hack' the ECU in order to run a different tune.

Guys, sorry to be the bearer of more bad news but this needs to be said. I had a detailed discussion with gadget on email. I basically asked him why couldn't we just bolt on his URD kit and hardwire the UCON into the ECU. Seeing how this is just an "ECU connector" issue. Although there is a prototype out there, he has NO plans to release a supercharger for our application. Why? Because it's not worth it for him to produce. He told me he needs at least 10 kits ordered WITHOUT engine management to even get the ball rolling from a production standpoint... The problem is each kit will cost much more than the kit costs presently on his website. Point being there is more to the story than just an "ECU connector." I don't think anyone is willing to shell out the price I was quoted per kit without engine management. Case closed. End of discussion. Bye bye supercharger dreams.

I just read on another thread the 6th Gen will have a Supercharger! We may just have to wait until then.

Since that stupid Air Injection Pump killed our chance at a Supercharger, maybe we could put that thing to use, and re-route the air pipes to the intake, and get our forced induction fix that way! We might have to jumper it so it stays on all the time though.

I gotta ask then, why just yesterday 3/18/15 did Gadget post about just needing this connector? Why stir the pot if it's empty?

I would find it much more likely that the 6th Gen would have a turbo than a supercharger. The fuel economy benefits mean turbos are very in vogue right now, Porsches, Ferraris, Fords and Fiats. I can't even think of a mass produced car coming out with a supercharger in the last couple years, so I really can't see Toyota going super with the next 4R. On the bright side, a well done, low pressure turbo could mean a 25% increase in fuel economy.

Hi people,

People have high hopes and some just have none. R&D for supercharger takes roughly about 4-5 years time. By the time that TRD comes out, you're engine is already nearing 200,000 miles or generally speaking you got bored of it and sold it. It takes a lot of money and time into this kind of project, when 4Runners sales has dropped. Just not going to happen if people want to drive those funny looking crossovers. Yes, crossovers have taken over the 4x4 SUV's and Toyota is the last standing Body on Frame while the competition is going Unibody. This has hurt the TRD performance because really, there's no more competing even if the supercharger is out.

Toyota Racing Development has told everyone that the project has cancelled.
