2010+ TRD Supercharger

My bad. I missed the fact that the FJ was changed over to the 1GR-FE Dual VVT-i in 2010 and that the last gen Taco never got that engine. Thought I had found a cookie. Post removed.

So does anyone know what aspects of the Dual VVT-i engine design yielded the 34 hp and 12 lb-ft of torque gains? Combustion chamber changes? Variable exhaust valve timing? A .4 increase in compression ratio? A higher rev-range valve train?

I would think that a truck application would be much more focused on torque gains...

Read the post above I just did. That outlines the changes that led to the increase in power...
Mainly...
- Increased Compression ratio
- Variable timing on the exhaust cam (allowing for more overlap at WOT high RPM conditions)
- lighter weight pistons and less oil friction....

The benefits of the overlap... maybe mitigated by boost. In fact, I know they are.. but there are too many factors to be sure of the impact and it should be all tuneable. The cams advance and retard via an oil circuit managed by the ECU. NA motors normally need a lot of valve overlap to produce extreme output at RPM. This is the lope you hear on many performance V8 engines at idle. It's bad for performance and efficiency at idle and low RPM, but that is where VVTI comes in. It lets the motor run at 0 to negative overlap in light throttle and optimize based on load and RPM. Too much overlap with positive pressure in the intake will be inefficient as you will end up blowing intake stroke out the exh. A high performance NA cam profile vs a boosted cam profile are very different.. but for street use (non racing apps). A stock NA cam is usually really good with mild boost. I have not dealt with VVTI much in performance apps, I'm curious to know how they tune it for this application.

All the power increase is at higher rpms. In the mid rpm range - they're basically identical. The new one breaths better at high rpms. For normal driving they're very similar.

With an engine optimized for NA operation (light weight rotating assembly and high compression), adding boost isn't going to get you very far. I've said it before - but if it's more than 305hp I'll be surprised. There's a reason we're not seeing 400hp IS350s. And they're already 305hp N/A. But if the supercharger can provide a big bump in the lower rpm range it might not look great on paper, but could be pretty great for normal use. It's hard to get around the limitations of the internals though.

Just got back from 10 days driving in the mountains (ugh), and thought I'd see what Magnuson has to say ...

"It has 2500 miles on it, with no issues ...

I asked several other questions, but above is really all I got. Nothing on the performance specs or pricing until release.

That they bought a new 4R certainly speaks to commitment I guess.

I sure hope this isn't priced over the moon.

i think the price is pretty predictable. I'm guessing something in the 5-7k range..

It will be too much for many... but there will be plenty willing to pay if the tuning and driveability are good.

Out of curiosity if this white buffalo were available, would you be able to install it with a dual battery tray and air compressor, or would it take up so much space you would need to make some hard choices?

Boy, that's a tough one. The few times in my life a great white buffalo was born and I saw a picture of it, it was more piss yellow than white. As much as I would like to have more power, Who wouldn't? for what sounds like 20% of what my vehicle cost new, I think I'd have to pass on it. I 'm a new comer to the forum and lurked for quite awhile before joining and from what I've read on this and other forums, they've been testing and it's been in it's final stages (a couple months out) for quite some time. Will it come out, yes, but I don't think it's going to be the end all to be all that some are making it out to be. If I was rich and had a lot of money to blow, maybe. Dual battery and and on board air would definitely be more of a priority.

Nobody cares if the price is too high or the juice is not worth the squeeze for you or whatever....

Some new info was given.. yet people feel the need to banter about the past. There is some useful info here and it should continue to grow as more information is released. If you hate on the idea of a supercharger for the 5th gen, please simply ignore this thread. It only creates clutter.
