Probably in the September-October time frame.
I think I am going to wait also. It seems that the SR5 & limited are past there extremely low rate initial production phase and the Trail is still in that phase. None have reached there full production rate and depending on how Toyota wants to market them they may never be a high rate production vehicle and go the way of the Land Cruiser.
Waiting to 2011 has three benefits:
1. Any fixes should be incorporated.
2. Added features (may be a front plate mounting bracket)
3. Considering the economy there will probably be no price increase & maybe even a decrease in actual purchase price. The yen is very likely to fall against the US dollar over the medium term in my opinion putting further pressure on pricing.
At first I felt I had to have the new 4runner, now not so much.
I have to keep in mind that I’m adding to the fleet & not in any real need of a new 4runner so it makes it easier for me to put things on hold.

What is your basis for your thinking?
This is'nt really a new vehicle. They have been making 4Runners for 26 years in Toyota's Tahara plant in Japan. Same plant the Lexus's are made in and considered the most most sophiscated auto plant in the world and has won awards for both the quality of production and attention to detail.

3600 miles and not even one quality issue for me.I have taken about half mine a part and put it back together again and have been all over and under this thing.The quality ceases to amaze me.
You might want to grab one BEFORE they cut the quality though,as was reported by Toyota themselves last month.Was'nt that GM's recipe for success ??

3.0L turbo diesel with a 6 speed manual tranny.You think maybe they would have sold more of the turbo diesels with manuals here then the 4 cyl's? Has anyone even seen a 4 cyl. model? Dealer here said you can't even order one???

Funny, the same thing happened to me a while back too. I dreamt that I was driving a 5th gen 4Runner Trail with manual tranny and diesel engine with my newborn baby in the back and she started crying when I went offroad and then I woke up and realized that she really was crying...haha.
My logic comes from previously owning a few first model year vehicles from various import manufactures. Some had a few bugs, while others were nothing, but a total PITA.

I always wait at least for the Mid-model Refresher/Facelift..usually 3rd year of production of a model.

Toyota does engineering improvements as running changes throughout the model year... they don't wait for a new model year to come up to make a small change that improves quality/reliability. The model year changes are for bigger things (new transmission, engine, etc.)
Seeing as nothing huge changed in the chassis or driveline (trans, diffs, etc), the only worry I would have is the engine. Seeing that this is just an update of the 1GR-FE, going from single VVT to dual VVT, I think it should be a pretty reliable engine too. Plus, this engine is probably even more closely related to the 2GR-FE than before now that it is dual VVT and that is quite a reliable engine.
Seeing as nothing huge changed in the chassis or driveline (trans, diffs, etc), the only worry I would have is the engine. Seeing that this is just an update of the 1GR-FE, going from single VVT to dual VVT, I think it should be a pretty reliable engine too. Plus, this engine is probably even more closely related to the 2GR-FE than before now that it is dual VVT and that is quite a reliable engine.

I have to say some of you are quite paranoid of first year models
Just figured I would post my experience with my 2003 4th Gen 4runner. I had bought the first one in the midwest back in the fall of 2002 and owned it for 3 years. The truck was 100% flawless, never once did I take it to the dealer for any problems or issues whatsoever. Oil changes every 5K and tire rotation through the 55K miles or so I put on it.
My opinion is that the 4th gen was a more significant change from the 3rd gen versus the changes from the 4th to the 5th gen. The 5th gen rides on virtually the same chassis, uses just an updated existing engine and tranny, and has many of the same technologies used on previous models. I would say the 2010 would be hopefully more reliable than the last....again just my opinion

My 03 is like yours. Zero problems and still runs like new.

Heck, I would settle for a turbo diesel with a 6 speed automatic.
Not holding my breath for a turbo diesel with with either tranny.
Nice dream, but sometime we have to wake up.
I have to admit there are quite a few aspects of my 3rd gen that I miss when compared to my 2010 SR5. IMO, the 3rd gen is still one of the nicest looking exterior designs ever brought to market. It wasn't until after I test drove a 2010 that I realized how dated the interior dash styling was in my 2001. The power of my '10 over my '01 is very noticeable as well; particularly on the highway at 70+ mph in hilly/mountainous areas. However, I felt much more connected to the road when driving my 3rd gen than the '10. The smaller stature of the 3rd gen - along with the fact that Yakima offered a front crossbar setup over the front door, which they have no plans to do for the current model
- allowed better access to the roof to load my toys. I would have loved to have kept the '01 and have the 2010, but with three other vehicles in the parking lot, that was to much of a stretch. Maybe I will find a nice 3rd gen again in the future to go along with my new T4R.
