2011 T4R Trail Brake Issue

I would really appreciate feedback from the community on this.... Just bought a new 2011 4R Trail. Love it, except the brakes. The pedal is soft, and lots of free play before brake engages, I can easily push it almost to the floor, and even more concerning is that to hold the truck at a stop, the brake pedal height is below the gas pedal. Kind of scares me that in an emergency, my foot may be on the brake and gas at the same time. Took it to dealer, they said that was normal. I am having lots of trouble with that, seems like a design defect to me.

Does anyone else with a 2011 have a similar observation or complaint??? How does your pedal feel????? Does it go below the gas pedal?????

Yup. Mine is just below the gas pedal at a stop.

There is a snarky video around here somewhere of someone else's brake travel, coming from a sporty car I was not used to the brakes. But I am more comfortable with them now.

Go take a test drive of another 4R and see how that compares. That should give you a baseline for correct or not.

I bought a 2011 SR5 and I am having the same problem and I am already concerned with the brakes. I haven't had a chance to take it to the dealer yet. When I have driven it, I felt like I had to ride the brakes. Twice the brakes got hot. I pulled into work and a coworker couldn't believe the smell. Will let you know when I take it in to the dealer.
 
I have a 2011 TE. The brakes feel soft and less responsive compared to my last car, but nothing like you describe. They should feel and behave like truck brakes, which mine do.

My brakes feel a bit mushy initially, but tighten up pretty quick. In fact, I have engaged my brake assist twice once towing and once driving ca 40mph. It is a profoundly unpleasant experience. But, quite effective.

Take it back to the dealer and get them to check it out. Should stop like 4 disc when you stand on it.
 
2011 Brake Issue--Mine is a little different

I have a 2011 4Runner-Limited. The brakes have 3 issues:
1. A little mushy
2. When braking, there is a split second when the brake releases and then re-engages. Not enough to affect the braking, but bothersome nonetheless.
3. Occasionally the brakes feel like there is something grinding.

I took it to my dealer who took it for a test ride and couldn't reproduce it. Then he had the service manager take it for a test ride and he couldn't reproduce it. Basically, they had no idea what I was talking about. They said that maybe I was not used to a 'electronic assist' brake with 4 wheel disc brakes.

I'm still a little nervous because the brakes are still this way.

Brake issues

Hi:

Today i felt something different when I was braking. I was running in an asphalt road that have a by level, just in the moment when I crossing from the soft pave to the rough I brake an I heard the grinding noise. But I try to reproduced again and nothings happens.
 
When I read the title to this thread my first thought was, "Who in the heck in tracking their 4Runner?!?"

If I have confused those of you that don't spend much time around the race track I will offer an explanation. Trail braking is a common term in racing that basically means you stay on the brakes even after entering a turn so you can load up the front tires more to dial out some understeer.

Just to be clear - sometimes people refer to a "grinding noise" when they hear the ABS engage.. When the ABS is working it makes a noise. Just wanted to check with the posters here to be sure that's not what they're hearing...
 
Sounds like you got a problem - shouldn't be that far down.

I too have had that "OH CRAP" feeling when the power assist kicked in...WOW.

Wah? Doesn't everybody go driftin' in their 4runner?:roadkill:
 
I am glad i found this post because the wife and i just bought a brand new 2011 limited 4 runner and the breaks are terrible on it .. i am gonna take to the dealer on the weekend .. super spongy and it feels like your riding them hard just to come to a stop and fighting the auto transmission ..
peddle almost has to go to the floor to stop ... also at a light if they are not jammed on they will start to lurch forward oh so slowly ..
i have a dodge 1 ton also and it breaks like a Ferrari compared to this thing ...

somewhat disappointed especially when you see those big vented discs front and back

Break Issues

I have the same problem....took it to my dealer today...they found nothing.
Said it's fine...only explanation was we don't design them we just fix them and there's nothing that we can find wrong. I also have a dodge truck which is much easier to drive.
