2011 Trail MPG

Hello. I have a 2011 Trail edition with BF goodwrench tires. I have only 1500 miles on it and I am only averaging 15.2 mpg. Is anyone seeing this? 50/50 highway and city. I assumed I would get 17 mpg at a min. The dealer said it is due to breakin period of first 5000 miles. does this make sense? thx

My SR5 got a little better after 2K. I now have 5K on it and have not noticed any improvement after 2K. What kind of BF Good "wrench" tires did you put on? A heavier/larger tire will definitely decrease your milage. Check the listed weight vs. stock.

Not gas mileage related but,...Is there some place in the manual about the Breakin period?

I just got mine, SR5, 200 miles if that and I have been getting 18.5/gal.

I have the 2011 TE, as well. When my truck arrived, it had 60 miles on it and the computer showed MPG of 11.9. So I'm guessing every person who test drove it just stomped on the gas pedal every time someone looked in the driver's direction.

Since getting it, I've put on wider tires and added a lift. I've been driving like a grandma on Sunday (typical new car fear with me; that usually wears off around month three with me) and been limited to 80/20 city/hwy, and I'm still sitting at 14.6 MPG some 400 miles later. At this point I'm happy mpg wasn't anywhere near the top of my desired specs for this vehicle.

I was getting around 11-13 mpg with a lift and tires until I hit about 4-6k miles... I noticed it starting to get better around there. I'm at 8k and getting about 16mpg now (still with lift and tires). It does get better with break in.

Mine with just different tires gets about 19 mpg in mainly highway driving. Well, as "highway" as the DC beltway gets, anyway.

If my right foot gets impatient mileage can drop pretty quickly.

A buddy with a SR5 says his mileage jumped a bit around 5000 miles or so.

OP, that mileage figure does seem a bit low. Check your tire pressure, and check your tires for weird wear patterns indicating an alignment issue. Toyota gives you one free wheel alignment in the first year or something, and maybe that's what's needed.

Everything stock. 600 miles and getting about 22.5 so far. And yes, that's mpg american. I don't know, you guys must be tromping on it or living in some hilly spots.

I have e-rated tires, and now a boxy tent on my roof. I get 20+ mpg on the highway and 17 in the city... as long as I keep the speeds reasonable. When the speed limit says 55, I get 21mpg or higher by sticking to it. When I push it to 70, mpg drops to the mid teens. The first year we got it we drove to Yellowstone, we were getting mid-20 in the park because we stuck to the 45 mpg limit.

For you new TE owners, reset your mileage counter before you get on the highway and then see what it is at the end of your trip (long, short... doesn't matter) and then compare that with what your computer is reporting now. If you have the Nav, hit the Info button and check the fuel consumption screen as you are driving... it'll show you haw much of a leadfoot you really are.

I still have stock tires :( hopefully switching out soon but I am getting about 19-20 avg 50/50 city highway. about 2k on it and it's been getting better and better millage from the beginning. Haven't seen a significant gain in the past few hundred miles but slowly...

I did what mike said to do when I first got the truck and the truck has been wrong since the beginning. off by up to 2 mpg. It varied.

285/70-17's and I am getting 17.6 MPG. Don't have a roof rack though so that probably netted me a couple tenths.

I have been resetting mine when I jump on the highway and I usually get about 21. Like you said though, if you drive in the 75+ mph range, I get about 19 mpg. I've noticed one thing that really affect the mpg is the wind. I got a full 2 mpg less going into about a 15mph headwind.

Mileage was lower than advertised until about 6000-8000 miles. Now am averaging 17.4 mpg..65% city, 35% highway. On acceleration, I usually try to stay below 3000 RPM's...not driving like an old man, but not driving like a maniac either.

I'm glad to see all of these higher MPG numbers. I have 350 miles on the odo and I'm seeing 14.2 MPG. Thats mostly city driving tho. Only time I've been on the highway so far is the 10-15 min drive home from work. I've also been keeping it under 3k rpm on acceleration. Honestly, I don't mind tho because it's a lot better than what I got in my wrangler before this!

I have a little less than 3,000 miles on my SR5. The first 1,000 miles I averaged around 20 mpg. Since then I now average 22.9 mpg, I use cruise control whenever possible.

No fair. Alberta gas is generally better quality, and unless you're in the badlands or Banff it's flat as a pancake. You can see straight to Winterpeg from there.

Western Canada is the only place where I'd put regular into a car that's only supposed to take 91+ octane and expect it to run just as well.

My stock TE averages right at 20mpg when driven 70/30 hwy/city. The split is in terms of miles driven, not time.

The lowest mpg was 17mpg and that was with almost all city driving.

Normal !!

2010 Trail, stock, w/ 18k miles as of today. Avg between 75-80mph and do about 75% highway. Averaging approx 19.4 as long as I start up slow...and then maintain.

Stop and Go, and pushing the peddle down and watch that needle move to the left!

Also to Mudcat - If the dealership just started your truck and let it idle a bunch while showing it around that will drop miles too...but your comment was very funny!!:trophy:

Mike I wish I could get that kind of milage, out of mine. It's mostly stock, with only the stubby antenna mod, and E-Rated BFG AT KO's (stock size) and the best I can avg is about 17.5mpg (hand calc and computer are with in .1 always), I got 19 on my last tank but, this tank back down to mid 17's. My Daily commute is 13 miles, 3 city 10 hwy. I'm even running my tired at 55psi to try and squeez more out of them (emailed bfg and that's the pressure they recommened for the e-rated 265/70R17's). Thinking of droping it down to 45.

Are the Duratrac's really that better of a hwy tire then the BFG AT KO's? Could it be the diffrence in location? I even try to keep the eco light on the time, I've kind of made a game out of it to see how long I can keep it on. :)
