2011 Used SR5 vs. 2018 New SR5?

Hi there - I'm deciding between a couple vehicles:

2011 SR5
69,500 miles
Lift kit & 18" premium wheels/off-road tires
Immaculate inside & out except for a rip on the center console
Negotiated down to $24,000

New 2018 SR5 (standard options)
Negotiated down to $34,000

I will be financing the purchase at a rate of 2.5% variable

I'm replacing a totaled 2003 Honda CR-V, so either rig is going to feel pretty fancy to me

Will you off road to take advantage of lift? Do you want new? If you get new, all you lift?

$10k difference for 70k miles.

Really depends on want vs need. If you like the 2011, will utilize the lift - then I'd go for that.

I would say go brand new. It’s only $10k more and you will get warranty and a brand new car. Easy choice.

It's just a baseball mom, run-around-town vehicle for me. Well, that and trips up and down from the ski mountain, through deep unplowed snow, etc. in winter.

I would not lift a new truck.

Am I crazy or do the 2011-2013 models have more headroom than the 2016-2018? I felt kinda squished in the 2016 and 2018 I test drove.

I keep going back to $10k is $10k and both vehicles will be a huge upgrade for me. But the new ones sure smell nice

If it is 4wd, the 2011 will have a manual t-case plus no air injection. These are both more trouble free than the 2018 (not that the 2018 is unreliable... just that less is usually more in these trucks)

The 2018 will have the updated plastic front and rear bumper which offer a better approach and departure angle.... Plus better resale.... but again for 10k more.....

I would want to know what the lift kit is... Spacers... No thanks.

I'd go new. Yours from the beginning. Stock from the beginning. No surprises. If you keep it for 15 years like your CRV, it's around $50/mth for new.

If you go used, find a mechanic you trust for a thorough inspection. Who put on the lift? How long has it been on the vehicle?

Sorry, I mis-read the description. It's a leveling kit, not a lift kit. It was put on in 2015, at around 50k miles. It was put on by Overland Motors, a boutique here in town that specializes in off road vehicles.

When I bought my 2010 a couple years ago I was envious of the front end of the newer models. Since then I have grown to love the look of my 10 over the 16+.

You have to decide what's important and valuable to you.

Is $10k worth having a vehicle that's new, never owned, with a warranty (both bumper to bumper and powertrain extended) and the fact that it's newer and fresh with better electronics, updated styling, etc.

The resale value on 4Runners is a testament to their dependability and appeal in the market, but I have a difficult time buying any vehicle that has 70k miles on it for $10k less.


It's even worse of a gap issue for vehicles with 30k miles on it, because then it almost completely becomes ("is a warranty worth less than $5k?"). For me, it was.


I'm a staunch believer that you shouldn't buy a new vehicle, there's always someone who bought one and barely drove it and now they're trading it in at a steep loss. With 4Runners, it's one of the few exceptions to the rule. It's impossible to find a steal on a barely used one.

Go new. I was in the same boat. Found the used prices to be a little insane. Better off with warranty and a new ride. You never know how abused the used T4R was. May be immaculate, but other internal parts could be worn. For 10K, you can have peace of mind for 3 years.

Correct. Option was 2.5% variable or 3.99% fixed. Even if the interest rate goes nuts, the variable has a cap of 5.5%. It would take quite a few rate hikes to match the fixed rate.

over what loan duration? if you're talking a 72 month loan or something buy the one that's not that.

both the new vehicle and used vehicle have lending at the same rate? usually used vehicles are a higher rate.

is that what the dealership is offering or did you shop around for financing? that rate seems high (but I know interest rates have gone up a bit since i bought mine a couple years ago). never finance from the dealership, come with your own financing.

its the market value of the used 4runners, their residual value is great. I would recommend purchasing new and enjoy it. My wife purchased a 17 sr5 premium and loves it, I've made few changes to it considering we plan on keeping it long term.

I was shopping for a new car myself and was leaning towards a trd pro but wife wouldn't allow it. She didn't want us both having the same suv. The trd pro will hold its value, keep it for 2-3 years and trade in or sell it. You will not lose much value with those. It comes down to budget on what you really want to spend. The 70k miles is nothing for the 4runner you will easily get another 200k. Either way you will be happy

its the market value of the used 4runners, their residual value is great. I would recommend purchasing new and enjoy it. My wife purchased a 17 sr5 premium and loves it, I've made few changes to it considering we plan on keeping it long term.

Not in the Northwest. Most 2014s here are listed at $30k+. It seems that most folks who trade these rigs in after 3-4 years are the ones who bought all the bells and whistles, which I don't need/want. It's very hard to find a decent SR5 that's just a few years old. I would either go 2010-2012 or new.

And yes, it's 2.5% whether I purchase new or used. Thru a credit union, which is the lowest rate I can find, even with an 800+ credit score. 48 month loan on the used, probably 60-72 on the new.

I think I'm going to end up going used. If I were paying cash it would be a no-brainer, but $10k more debt is not something I'm comfortable with.

Had a pre-purchase inspection with a mechanic I trust, everything except tires & brakes came back nearly perfect.
