2012 4Runner swap entune head unit for a 2015

Hello guys I don't want to get in trouble for starting a tread that might be already in here but I couldn't find the answer. My question is I have a 2012 4Runner SR5 non JBL and has you all know navigation updates are hard to get in the older units unless you go to the dealership and pay I see updates for the newer head units on SD cards available on eBay but never for the Older trucks that use the USB stick updates. Since my truck already have an entune navigation can I swap it for a 2015 or 2016 unit without loosing any of the controls I need the navigation to get around and like to keep it updated. Any help on this will be appreciated.

not sure but couldn't you copy the sd to usb ? I'd personally just upgrade to an after market head unit. My wife has a 17 4runner and we both love it both the UI on the head unit seems dated to me. I'm considering purchasing a tundra or 4runner and pending the year I'll probably install aftermarket
 
Thanks the sd to USB it's worth a try they go for around 50 on eBay I see a few newer HU for sale too and if possible would like to keep an oem unit on the truck and be able to keep it up to date I recently moved from NY to Georgia and when it comes to driving I'm as dumb as it can be i really depend on the navigation I have a Magellan portable unit but don't really like it hanging on the windshield. If anyone else knows if the swap to a newer HU is possible please let me know. Thank you very much guys

I buy one every year.......Can't say I really see a difference, but for $12 just do it.

Or are you saying that 2012 has entune?

Back to my question. My 2012 4Runner sr5 has the entune navigation HU that needs to be updated with a USB drive not DVD and the newer units use an SD card that are easy to get on eBay s would love to get a 2015 or newer HU and switch it. Does anyone know if it would work on my 2012? Would it be plug and play without having to modify anything?

More than likely it is physically the exact same chassis. If the plug pins are different, you can go with 'Metra on-line' adapter cables from ebay/Amazon!

Hello again guys thanks so much for your help, I'm still looking for information on swapping my 2012 4Runner non JBL entune navigation for one that's more recent 2015, 2016 but still haven't found any answers if they are compatible if the connectors in the rear of the units are the same. Does anyone have pictures of the the back of the radios? 2012 and 2016 factory entune navigation head units I just don't want to buy one to later find out the wiring is different. Thank you very much
 
About the only thing the same is main power and speaker connector. Older 5th gens have an extension module behind the glove both while 2014 and up is all at the radio.

Just go aftermarket with Android Auto ore Apple carplay.
 
Thanks for help Superjet, I like the oem look I guess I'll have to settle for my old entune head unit I just wanted to switch to a newer one that has more features and the SD card maps
 
Not a problem.
I have a 2016 Limited JBL. The OEM nav lasted about 2 weeks.
Apple Carplay radio with new sub in OEM enclosure and a mini amp to drive it.I couldn't be happier.
 
2012 4Runner factory navigation swap

Hey guys I went ahead and purchased a 2016 entune navigation for my 2012 4Runner so far I’ve been able to get almost everything working except the backup camera if someone has any information on that I’ll really appreciate it since I’m upgrading from a 2012 entune navigation to a 2016 entune navigation some of the connections are different on the newer unit I need to know which wires I have to tap into to get it going there’s an adapter for an aftermarket camera but I’ll like to keep the factory camera I’m also having an issue with the music apps like pandora I heart radio etc not showing on the screen I’m not sure why since those apps are part of the entune system maybe is because this radio belonged to another truck. If someone knows how to fix this issue please let me know by the way camera shows on the head unit not the mirror.

So was this successful or not because i havent seen any updates online about it and i have a 2012 and thing about doing the same thing. Please send me a private message is it was successful or what wrong
 
I'd like to see more details on this as well. Want to start prepping for the 2020 head unit so that I can have factory CarPlay and AA
