Issue retrofit 2021 Head unit

I have a 2016 with navigation and awful Entune 2.0.
Found a non-JBL/Navigation Entune 3.0 from a 2021.
It included the special coaxial cables to connect the navigation. I also bought the special harness from autoharness. However, when testing I get a message stating navigation App not installed! Yes, I know it is useless, but I want this to work properly and I use the built-in map as I drive on curving roads as a predictive measure.
Is this unit defective? Any ideas what to do? Anyone experience this? Urgh. Never an easy job.

tad surprised that this would happen, I would try the following. I had no issues hooking the head unit i purchased

1. hard reset of head unit , reset back to factory settings
2. check for latest operating software and upload via usb. Even if you have it installed already may want to give it a try.
3. double check correct wiring (not sure if the gps wires were able to be plugged in different connectors) . GPS antenna plugged in?

Ok, I hooked it all back up. It went through a power cycle on its own and now seems to actually work. Whew.
And for Carplay I needed to select some unsuspecting feature (i forget what it was named) and that then let me activate Carplay and changed
the name of the feature to Carplay and that does indeed work now as well.
The App: Remote Connect was asking for a 6 digit PIN...but I probably can't use that feature anyway.

nice! its a good upgrade and adds a new feeling /look to the interior plus the car play feature. I use car play about 95% of time with pandora or spotify and waze/ google for maps.

I must be out of the loop, but are you guys using the 2021 screens in the older 4Runners, is it plug and play? I may need to look for one for my 2014!

quick facts:
non jbl head units
auto harness adapter ( makes it plug n play)
hazard switch modification , simple to do but take your time!!!

source head unit
Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market. (various pricing some as low as $200-900 range
Ebay will vary
local market place is helpful too

One thing that I would add was the bezel on my sourced head unit had a few holes drilled in it that needed repair —so I bought a cover from Amazon for $40 or so and it looks OEM again.

Actually after I saw how good it looked in matte black, I bought the rest of the trim covers and did the whole interior

Thanks for the info,

are there options for the Limited JBL head units, or will this only work with the N on-JBL stereo systems?
