2012 Engine Noise Tappets seem loud

I'm looking at a 2012 fully Loaded SR5 with every option I guess. DVD, 3rd seat, BU camera, Only 36k miles and very clean... From a Dealer but not a Toyota dealer.. so I can't get the CPO warrenty.. but it's listed at $29,000 and is clean. This has the 4.0 motor and when first starting up it sounded like load tappets.. Even after taking out for test drive it still sounded a little noisey.. Had fresh oil and was full.. Are they supposed to be a little clattering from the lifters? Possible dealer didn't use correct weight of oil.. This is a big dealership not a small shop... I've had 4runner in past with the 3.4 which ran very quite.. but this new one just seemed a little noisey.. Plus is there anything I should be looking for as I haven't bought a new car since 2001 and that was my 4runner.. loved it..

Yep... assuming it's not excessive, it's normal. My 2011 had this and I think most do. I did a little research before buying and found it's a common thing so I never worried about it. You should be under warranty for a while still so I would worry even less... though you could always negotiate or buy extended warranty if that would help you sleep a little better.

Here's a search where you can find several past posts on this... good luck!

The newest 1GR-FEs from about 2010+ use hydraulic lifters, which seems to accentuate the 1GR-FE's notorious "ticking" noise. Almost all 1GR-FE's have an audible tick to them, the issue is when you get past that grey area of, "they all sound like that" to "hmm... something sounds broken."

Thanks, I didn't think anything was broke but a little noisey to ask the question before I buy. Anyone ever try different oil brands, that made any difference? I'm looking at this SR5 totally loaded DVD 3rd Row seat leather, moonroof etc.. While driving the ECO light on the dash would come on and off while accelerating, is there a way to shut this off? It has the manuel lock 4wd shifter. I noticed some have the turn dial switch for select 4wd. Which is better? I think for 29k it's worth it with 35k miles and clean carfax . I'm gun shy because it's been on lot for 2months and others in area are going for 29-35K.. This is a big Dealership, not a Toyota one.. I just can't find anything wrong with it.. KBB says worth 32k.. Are there any problems with the 2012? I had a 01 4runner for 12yrs till this Friday when the radiator went and mixed water into tranny .. to much to fix..Love the Toyota or a pathfinder..

Sorry but link is NG.. I want to get a extended warrenty because of all the electronics. I tried to go to Toyota and got a run a round on their web-site. I'm buying from a Non- Toyota dealer so they don't do CPO.. but I want to get a full wrap warrenty if I could apply for one myself..Anyone ever do this? I see them advertised but don't know where or how to get the best for the money...

Most of the aftermarket warranties are scams/far more expensive for what you get from what I have seen. The Toyota extended warranty isn't bad, but it can be a bit pricey and is only obtainable on CPO vehicles and New ones. :(

When I purchased my used 4Runner, it wasn't from a toyota dealership. Even looking up on the toyota owner website to see if that last oil change was from a toyota, but it wasn't. Anyways before I did the oil change the engine wasn't too loud and the oil was still golden. I went ahead and change it anyways to Eneos 0w-20 and wow I can definitely hear those tapping noise. So yes I believe a different oil can quiet it down. Just which one is it.

Also the invisible supercharger whining noise, which is another topic.

They are defiantly a bit noisy. Compared the the "Subaru click" I get in my old Impreza, it nothing! As far as the warranty goes....it's a Toyota, with the least complicated suspension and electronics of the group. I wouldn't worry about it. Also, you may find another 2010 plus and just compare engine noise, so you can get a ballpark of what your dealing with.

I looked at the posts on this and contacted a few Names.. I started a new post on this subject to purchase warranty deal.. I don't know anything about this as I never did it b4, but I definiatly want one.. if I buy this... just one thing go wrong and it could cost a $1,000. Dealers get 110 hr. so just for that I'd be willing to a reasonable price but done want to get ripped off...

The Eco light is switchable and the "manual lock" instead of a switch I believe makes that a trail edition. Dealers frequently get them confused and it could make this a don't miss deal. Doesn't happen to have a hood scoop?

sr5 4x4 5th gens had the manual transfer case shifter until 2013. Manual is much better IMHO, but it does not really matter all that much for most people. Dial is just more to go wrong.

Aaah too bad... I got my trail for 29k with only 34k on the odo. Thought OP may have a sweet sweet deal on a trail. Still a good deal though.

The transfercase is manual, but the front differential still has an ADD with a 4WD module, so its less crap; but still electronic.

No it's not a Trail model. Def SR5.. The ECO light is Green and in dash with Tach cluster... What is the ECO? As I would drive it would come on and off... Salesman didn't really know to much.. Possible gas saving idoit light .. It would come on when I gave it gas then sometimes just driving along...Just didn't know if I could shut it off somewhere? I didn't buy it yet.. I have to go back to school to figure out what all the button and switches do...
