2012 Limited XREAS Options

My wife's 2012 Limited with the XREAS blew the driver side front strut. After a lot of researching and a phone call with Toyota, it seems I'm looking at ~$1000 to replace it and the opposite corner (because apparently that's how it's done on this system). I also know most online have said to rip the system out and replace it with aftermarket (oddly enough, so did the Toyota Tech). The problem is this is a daily driver that doesn't get offroaded beyond two tracks on the farm and I don't want to lift it.

How are the 5100 series front and rear? I can use my stock coils (although I do have 70k on them), and have it set to 0" and be good to go with less invested, or I can splurge and go with a full system (Toytech, Bilstein Coilovers, OME, etc. , but I really just want to maintain a good on road ride with no lift since my wife drives it, and from a practical standpoint, it shouldn't be lifted.

So wanting to get away from the XREAS, but maintain a great on road ride, what are your suggestions?

It wont be as flat in the corners but the cheapest option would be to get someone's take off stock suspension from a trail or SR5.

I would go with 5100's as a replacement, easier to come buy, brand new I suspect they will be a bit firmer then the stock suspension but I would not loose sleep over it.


I don't know your wife but sometimes its best to keep her happy which may mean like for like OEM replacement.

This is accurate, however your wife will definitely feel the difference.. It will be a little more harsh of a ride.

Call junk yards and see if you can get a used one or online.

I have a set that I took off... shipping would kill us both lol

I'll be interested to see how it turns out, I also think the ride will be harsher with 5100s, or more so if you get some SR5 suspension.

If you're willing to splurge, but don't want to replace XREAS, would a King OEM set be worthwhile (or is that overkill, just replace the half set of XREAS?)

There's various levels of Kings an other brands and at some point it will be overkill. They also serve different applications.

XREAS is a hydraulic linked shocks suspension .. Nothing after market will be equivalent.

There's plenty of suspension threads on this forum. No need to go into a deep dive of suspension comparisons.

If it was me and it was my wife driving, i would keep XREAS on with as little out of pocket as possible. I'm saying because i instantly got complaints from the wife when tires/wheels and suspension were swapped.

I have a 2013 Limited with the XREAS, and my shocks are blown too. It rides terribly! I'm hitting the bump stops on rough roads. Anyways, I ordered a set of the Dobinsons as replacements. I chose the struts up front to level the stance at the same time. I'm going to keep the stock springs. FYI, it's 2WD and a 100% street truck.

The XREAS was blown when I bought it, so I won't be able to compare it to a good XREAS system. I would never try to fix the XREAS though. It's too expensive and I've read too many threads with people who have had problems. Also, you can't recharge the hydraulic system. Someone said that even a local dealership can't recharge the system. I don't think it's worth the headache.
