2012 TE Conquers Elephant Hill in Utah

Hi all,

First post, new owner of a 2012 TE. Still bone stock but decided to try it out on a 100 mile backroad exploration of Canyonlands National Park. I had already taken it over Schofield pass without incident and wanted to push it a bit further. After making it over Elephant Hill we decided to follow the road along through Canyonlands NP, up Bobby's Hole and into Beef Basin near the Abajo mountains. We explored several indian cliff dwellings in the area and racked up over 100 miles on the trip. Truck performed flawlessly, coming from a lifted and built Jeep Rubicon i was a bit skeptical of the trucks abilities but no more. With a baby on the way we were forced to trade the Jeep on something a bit more practical and I'm pleased with our choice!

Now, if only the DW will let me add a mild lift and 285's... :confused:

Awesome!! I love southern Utah. I did Elephant Hill as a kid with my father in an old Nissan Pathfiner. Can't wait to get my 4Runner TE, the wife just needs a little more convicing. Soon enough though.
 
Schofield was technically a bit tougher (not much, but mostly due to the length of the trail) We did Lead King Basin prior to Schofield so it added a bit of rocky terrain. No issues with stock tires and no lift, just have to take your time. Couple of bumps on the skids but no damage. Unfortunately no pictures as the DW was puckered to the seat, and pregnant. She was a trooper though!
 
By the way, the KDSS was flawless and I believe truly contributed to the ability of the truck to achieve what it did in stock form. As good or better than my Rubicons electronic disco or any manual disco's I've ever had.

Great first post and welcome to the forum!
Elephant Hill was the first real trail I went on in my 4Runner too a couple of years back. Beautiful scenery and a fun trail!
"Learning to Fly" was an appropriate song as it was the first trail I took my 4Runner on my way to Moab coming up from the Grand Canyon..... Elephant Hill-Canyonlands National Park-2010 4Runner - YouTube

Let me know if you every get crazy enough to try Lion's Back. I was a passenger running it once and won't drive or passenger it ever again.

You're lucky you got to do Lion's Back, it's now closed. Apparently a developer owns the land, and is planning a condo development.

That sucks!!! When did it close? Even though I'd never go on it again, others should have a chance. I rode it about 10-12 yrs ago and it scared the crap out of me.
 
Nice video of Elephant Hill Harper7, shows the terrain better. Looks a lot easier in a lifted TE.

And yep, too bad Lions back is closed, drove by the closed gate Sunday. Baby LB is open, but much tamer.
