2013 SR5 4x4 Update

180516 Trek 364 Within 15 Miles

After 3 days of very mild rain I decided to check out the sand situation. The sand is perfect! I was able to get the top of a steep hill that I haven’t successfully climbed in about 15 years of trying with two different Land Rovers and the SR5.

The trail is very steep climbing in very deep sand. The ridge is broken rock on top but the climb up is ridiculous. I used Low Range 3rd gear. I had the A-Trac engaged but it never came on. I was at about 1/2 throttle. Great view from the top.

Incidentally, for those who do not follow my adventures: I’m generally all over northern Nevada, however these photos and today’s adventure was all just 15 miles from my house.

The last photo is sitting on top the ridge - - - Only took 15 years to get to the top - - - Sand dampness was just right!

Wait, you didn’t need 285’s, a 3” lift and lockers??? You did it with just a good set of set of stock size tires? :lol:

Going back down I used the Downhill Assist Control for the first 50 yards and then turned it off as 4LO and 1st gear was sufficient. with so much drag from the sand.

Later in the same day we had a continuous thunderstorm for several hours (.6" rain).

Then to top it off we had four small earthquakes around 10:30pm (M1.3 to M2.0).

No off-roading; I try not to do mud.

Recovering from surgery -

- so pretty much bedridden for a few weeks.

So while I'm not driving my TR4 And definitely Not doing anything in 4Low, I'm reading some of the queries that other people write in.

I have no opinion on traction matts Never owned one. Around here just take my axe and chop some big sage brush stalks.

I carry a small 12 v compressor butt seldom use it because I rarely air down.

I do not have any auxiliiary lights - Can't think of any use for them. I do have several LED flashlights - Mostly for exploring mine tunnels - the safe ones. Hard hat for same use.

I have a roof rack, rusting in the back yard that I had on my first Land Rover.

No use for a cold air induction.

No use for Locker - A-trac is all you need (and good tires0,

No use for traction control - If you have experience you're fine,

No use for lift or larger than stock tire diameter. If the rock is larger than 12 inches - drive around it or move it.

The stock SR5 does it all.

woke up at 2am - - somehow dreaming that the sr4 is a girl...

anyway - later this am i got to drive about 5 miles. no 4wd, no offroad.

but when you are recovering from surgery the sr5 seats are more comfortable than any seating in the house - - -

Just curious, what do you take with you on longer trips that is truck / recovery / etc., specific? Ever any extra gas?

What I take along

Depends on whether I'm alone or accompanied by another rig; time of year; Length of trek; length of time on trail; Type of trail.

Basics that I always carry:
6 gallons of water (required by state)
shovel (required by state)
axe (required by state)
small water bottles
rope
come along
hitch
d-rings
tow straps
lunch
small tool box
hat
gloves
jacket
camera
gps
spare batteries
Nevada, Utah, Oregon, N. California State Atlas and gazeteers + more detailed topo maps

If on treks of more than 200 miles:
I carry a 5 gallon jerry can (NOT the CA approved - We can still buy and carry the old fashioned WWII type here in NV)

In wooded country (N. CA and W. OR);
limb lopper
saw

In fowl weather (winter):
Lots more clothing
heavier boots

Sometimes a second spare tire for really rocky country

Everything is packet in 2 or 3 heavy duty AMAZON type cardboard boxes

Nothing on the roof.

Have only driven 2000 miles this past 3 months -

Because I,m still recovering from two surgeries.

A couple of advantages:

My next services are for 100,000 miles where I had planned for transmission and transfer case drain and fill Right now still at 92,000.

Well I just got a very nice notice from Dolan Auto Group with lots of service discounts They think I,ve left them - - - Great timing!Should save some money on the tranny and t-box service!

Middlegate

Got out and doing a bit of driving the other day - mostly on roads due to very dry conditions. VERY DRY = 7% humidity VERY WINDY = 35 mph.

Any way, got out to Middlegate - had lunch at Middlegate Station (Pony Express and Overland Stage)

My daughter is getting her N63 twin turbo 4.4 liter 402HP v* (50i) in her BMW X5 after having the dealers trying to get vher to pay for a new engine.

What a piece of overdesined crap.
