2013 SR5 Engine/Transmission whine on deceleration

Hello,

Bought a 2013 SR5 which is my wife's daily, have had it for about 3 months now and it has about 3200 miles. I was wondering if any other owners might be experiencing the same issue below:

Highway driving say between 55-70mph and you let off the gas to decelerate and you can hear what sounds like a low whining noise coming from either the engine or transmission. As soon as accelerate and add more load to the drivetrain the noise goes away. It's fairly audible...

Just curious if anyone else has had this issue and if it's cause for concern.

Very hard to say if it is normal or not...have you tried comparing it to another 4runner at the dealership? I don't notice any whining upon deceleration, but I am also not very perceptive of my surroundings either

Out of curiosity, are you in manualmatic mode and have it in a lower gear? I do recall a whine if you have it locked into a lower gear...another thing you can try is putting it into neutral during deceleration to see if the whine stops.

Before you drive yourself crazy trying to figure it out though, it might best to just wait and bring it up to the dealership when you go in for you first 5000 mile service.

Can you also hear that sound when turning the 4runner off. I have the 2013 and they installed this new Air Induction Pump, where everyone is placing their secondary battery on previous years and it makes noises like airplane whining down. I actually like it. I don't know if it is the same sound.

YES absolutely, does that on ours also and it drives me nuts...sounds like a vacuum cleaner winding down with a ticking noise.

Ahh good idea, I didn't think about putting it in neutral when I hear it. I'll give that a shot! I have it in normal D (drive), not manual BTW.

Driving another one is an excellent thought to see if the symptom is across the entire line.

Yup! I think we just have to get used to that sound. I don't even pay attention anymore. Think of it like you driving a plane or very powerfull engine. Lol

With my windows down, even at operating temp, I always hear some air like sound when accelerating, almost like a quieter/lower pitched turbo.

I actually don't know if this is the same pump as V8 used to have. I just know with 13's models they installed this AIP for better efficiency or something and it makes that noise.

Update:

I had the service manager drive along with me and explained the problem to him, he has worked with Toyota for almost 40 years and has owned several 4Runners. He said the noise was perfectly normal due to the low mileage and gear tolerances being so tight.

Perfectly normal noise and should go away with time/break-in.

Did the whine ever go away? I purchased a 2014 SR5 and it does the exact same thing with 23K on it. Only under no load around 55 to 70 MPH

I too want to follow up on this thread. I bought a 16 TEP and have 14k already on it. I have recently found that when I shift out of 4h to 2h, I get a grinding noise betweem 30mph to 70mph when i let off the gas. I could accurately describe the noise as a warped rotor, except the noise is when my foot is either on OR off the brake and simply Decelerating. If I put my truck back in 4h, the grind is instantly gone. Once back to 2h, the grind is back ~ but sometimes not, which leads me to believe the Transfer case is not completely disengaging 4h/Front shaft.

-Now I have a TE.. so immediately assumed User error with not shifting the manual lever enough? However, I debunked that with essentially slamming in gear and pushing hard to engage.

I'm sorry if i started to thread jack if my description doesn't exactly fit the bill as that of the OP. Searching around, seems to lead to clunks and bangs, but this seems to be the only relevant thread to my issue.

Any thoughts to this?
