2013 T4R engine ticking noise

Again my 2015 does not make the noise at all. Our 4th company 5th gen (owned by GD2013) also does NOT make the noise. Sou our of our 4, only one does it... This disproves that "ALL" of them do it.

Based on the fact that everybody else's seem to make this noise, sounds like those three quiet ones you have are faulty! Better take them in and demand the tick.

I don't know what part of this some people have such a hard time understanding.

Fuel Injectors tick. That ticking varies with ambient temp and fuel temp.

The ABS modulator can tick sometimes.

Is your truck burning oil? No
Is your truck getting 9 mpg? No

Get over it. It's a sophisticated motor with lots of solenoids and electronic systems that make sure it's running right.

If it blows up tomorrow, post a b_itch thread. O/wise stop questioning what is normal.
 
I'll add to the pile that my 2016 has a slight "tick" at idle but it's nothing like a burnt valve or an old F-150 would sound like and it doesn't seem to persist once I get away from idle. I've actually come to enjoy it.
 
Do these engines have coil on plug? If so the tick you hear could just be the coils firing off. (I'm in bed and don't feel like going and investigating)

my 2016 4runner makes more engine noises than my other vehicles. at idle you can hear the ticking and other weird sounds to me.

troubleshooting any noise issue you have , from my location is impossible.
comparing 2 vehicles side by side that is a good way to determine if the sounds generated are normal or not.

try using a stethoscope to narrow down the source location.

how long do you store that 2013 noisy vehicle ?
 
Before my 4Runner I had an 07 Tacoma with the same 4.0L engine. It also sounded like that and after doing some research I found out that it's perfectly normal. I also confirmed the same findings with other Taco owners.
 
I just had my 2016 4Runner Limited in for the same noise. They told me that it was a normal noise, I find that hard to believe since it sounds like a diesel or that I have no oil in it! Its under warrantee so if it breaks down i'm covered!
 
Can someone tell me if an engine knocking is normal? I picked up a 2015 SR5 with 37K miles today. When I drove it it was cold so I didn’t pay much attention to the knocking, I figured it was just cold still. Once I’ve gotten it home it’s still there and it’s got me worried. Any help is appreciated.

This was my vid from March, 2017.. I think it got a bit louder still. Other than the sound, zero issues with the engine and I still drive it like I stole it *knock on wood*
 
Normal. My 2014 does it, my buddies FJ does it, my 2017 does it but not quite as loud, yet. It's worse when it's cold or on first start up of the day. Worried me at first since it does sound a lot like a bearing knock. Once up to operating temp it all but goes away. If I had to throw my guess into the hat, I'd say it's exhaust system related. Maybe the element in the(a) cat converter and allowance for heat expansion but that guess isn't based on any diagnostics, just that it does take a while to quiet down.
 
Interesting to read this thread. The noise in my 2013 SR5 4runner sounds very much like valve lash in an older car. Most noticeable when I am off the accelerator and slowing down to stop or turn. Sounds like a pretty common experience with no fix.
