2014 4Runner Motor Running in Back

2014 4Runner Limited, when the truck is shut off and parked, there is an electric motor in the back that comes on and runs anywhere from 10 seconds to a couple of minutes, then shuts off. Sometimes It does this several times an hour. The motor is mounted above the spare tire. Is it for emissions/suspension?

My concern is that this is not normal and the motor will continue to run and kill the battery. Is this a normal condition for this truck? Have you folks experienced this issue with this truck, etc?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure the noise is coming from under the truck and not from the back? I know that there is a cooling fan inside the right rear panel in the cargo area of the truck to keep the inverter plug cool. That could definitely be running during and after shut off. As for anything under the vehicle around the spare tire I am not sure entirely, but I would venture to guess that if it was a suspension system you would have the XREAS, but even then I wouldn't know what would be running. I do know that newer vehicles more often that not have a battery shut off that will prevent a total battery drain so you should be good there. I have seen VW Jetta's that the intercooler fan runs after the vehicle is shut off and will continue to run for a couple minutes. I hope this helps, and if it isn't the inverter in the back let me know and I will contact some connections I have and try to figure out what else it could be. Hope this helps.

I've also heard this noise a few times before. I have never turned on the inverter panel in the back, and to me it almost sounds like a fuel pump. I used to have a car with a pretty noisy pump and it sounds just like that.

Pretty sure its the rear blinker fluid reservoir pump re-filling your rear blinkers. Or the emissions pump, can't remember.

Could be the Fuel evap pump. Our 2015 FRS does this when it sits in the garage for a bit.

I'm betting it's fuel related as well. I noticed the same thing with my Corolla and found it to be some sort of a gas tank pressure test thing (which of course is the technical name for it).

That sounds like some kind of turbo timer. Some turbo vehicles have a "turbo timer" will leave the engine (or in that case apparently some separate fan system) running for a min or two after you shut of the vehicle to continue to allow oil/coolant to flow through the turbo and cool it off. The logic being that if the turbo is really hot when you shut of the engine, the oil/coolant that is left inside the turbo can get overheated and stressed.
