Agree--love the 5th Gen. TE, but if could just improve the quality of "plastics" a bit (and get rid of two tone black/gray dash and go all black) and add a little more headroom . . . at the least, that would be an appreciated improvement. I am 6'4" and the Trail's standard sunroof drops the headroom height over an inch+ putting my head in the liner--hate that.

Of course, 6-speed, more HP and direct injection would just about knock it out of the park . . . ahhh to dream.

I pretty much agree with all of this. Making the seat drop more would be just as good as more headroom, I think. I'm not a tall guy and the rear of the seat bottom is in the lowest position for me. (I'm 5'8".) I'm sure you taller guys would want more adjustability.

As far as Lexus price range . . . Edmunds quotes the RX350 as starting at $39,660 so really, the 4Runner TE and Limited . . . both over $40K MSRP . . . are in the Lexus price ballpark (and the TE interior is nowhere near as plush as a Lexus . . . of course granted a Lexus does not perform in "extreme" off-road like a TE either).

Based on capabilities, the step up to a Lexus from the 4Runner would probably be the GX ($53+), not the RX. The RX would be the step up from the Highlander, not meant for much offroad use, if any. Of course, you should also keep in mind that although Lexus can claim a fairly reasonable base price, they love to package them up to much higher prices.

While I get the entire circus/Barnum and Bailey "Greatest Show on Earth" theme . . . this statement coupled with Toyota's 4Runner comments at the NY Auto Show (after introducing the 2014 Highlander) . . . all are rather bold statements to make if Toyota then goes on to only make minor appearance changes. Not that false hype would surprise me though--we've all heard it before.

If you are referring to my statement . . . I never said the RX350 was "a step up." Another poster used those words.

I merely responded to an earlier poster's "premium feel" statement--did not address performance. Poster said he felt (and I agree) that Toyota might add "a bit of extra premium feel without forcing people to spend 10-20K extra to get into the Lexus."

I said the Lexus "RX350 does not perform in "extreme" off-road conditions like a TE,"(not designed to--but still probably meets the needs of most potential 4R owners). Rather, the RX350 does demonstrate that Toyota is capable of building a "premium feel" vehicle in this same price "ballpark" (and the 4R does not need to be nearly as plush). Never suggested the RX350 was a "step up" in off-road performance . . . it is afterall the GX that Lexus designed to be the more off-road capable. Regardless, looking forward to seeing what Toyota has in store for the 4R tomorrow (4/27).

Yeah that red looks brighter. I actually received some coupons from Toyota saying my 4 runner was due for a service and the 4runner in the ad was painted the same bright red. May be a Canadian option or a new color for 14.

The RX uses the same engine as a Sienna, Highlander, Camry, Venza, and Avalon. It also shares a transmission with those vehicles. The basic platform is the same. It is also built locally in Canada instead of Japan. The volume that it sells in reduces the cost. The 4Runner is on a platform shared with the Prado/GX and FJ. Engines are shared with the [base model] Tundra, [gas] Prado, and FJ. Same small list for transmission except adding Tacoma. The volume for parts for an RX is easily a scale of magnitude higher than the 4Runner. When you have that kind of buying power, you can get more value for your dollar.

oh my god that is ugly.

That might be one of those restyles that needs time to grow on you because my initial thought is yikes, that looks messed up.

Also, looks almost impossible to add an aftermarket bumper to that. seems like one big piece on the front.

OK, closer look reveals that the SR5* gets a body color TE style rocker panel and fender flares. That is a different ballgame all together and fixes the thing I absolutely hate about my SR5 (the chrome nonsense). I don't like the offset Toyota emblem on the grille crossbar, but the nose looks alright. The faux skid plate looks neat. I'll need to see it in person and it will likely have to grow on me.

*I'm thinking this is an SR5 because the roof rack is the SR5/Limited style w/ the caps black instead of gray/silver.

edit: just saw the hood scoop. I'm at a loss to what trim this is now. haha

I'm with Quentin. So glad they lost the stupid ass ground effects and chrome. It looks a little funky, but I bet it would look awesome with a lift/ tires. The hood scoop makes me wonder if they're reviving the sport edition?

I'm curious what model that is. It's not a TE, and interestingly they've debadged it.

Body-colored door handles, different roof rack trim, not sure if the wheels are blingy enough for the LE. Beats me, but I'd assume they'd use the LE for a showpiece.
