2014 4Runner

Yep, you found me. Good Internet work!

As I have been reading through this thread, it sounds to me that the V-8 piece would be nice as an option, not a standard feature. Sound about right?

And I agree with you about test driving being longer. Frankly, I'm getting a 2013 4Runner press vehicle in a few weeks to drive for a week to really expand my knowledge and see how it drives.

Tim

I'm perfectly fine with v6 we have now and I don't need independent suspension. My wishes for 4Runner are: all locking differentials, bigger ground clearance , real skid plates, sliders instead of running boards, good AT tires and as an option snorkel, winch and steel front bumper.

That's pretty specialized stuff. But all that is available aftermarket (except the snorkel). Besides....you don't want to have the same truck as everyone else. That would be boring.

My wife's 7AT C300 doesn't hunt between gears.

The software controlling automatic transmissions has improved greatly over the years.

And what about your 4R? Are you telling me it doesn't hunt between 4-5-4?

M-B, Toyota, apples, oranges.

Exactly right. Other than enthusiasts very few in NA actually want diesel in current economic conditions. Enjoy the ride and we will follow you and read your article.

Thanks! And thank you to everyone who responded. I feel much more informed about the 4Runner.

I'll make sure to post a link to my article when it is ready.

4Runner sells 45k units a year in the US.

Mercedes sold about 39K MLs in the US last year... The Mercedes GL class sold even less last year (26k)

Interesting. What are the sources of those statistics? Here in southern California, the 4-Runner, ML, and GL are all quite common.

Someone earlier in the thread remarked about hunting between gears. The 6-speed in my Explorer does not do that. I've never driven anything with more than 6-speeds (except my Trek). Has anyone else on this forum driven something with a 7, 8, or 9 speed automatic?

Ha that's funny. My trek has 24 and hunts quite a bit.

Never driven but the Chrysler 8 speeds are getting great reviews and improved mpg over the 5 and 6 speeds. Of course back in the day everyone thought 3 on the tree was just fine.

We'll soon get to see all 3 models in the flesh as TRD just told us that Toyota is having an "official unveiling" with the 3 models of 2014 4Runner here at the FJ Summit this Saturday.

Arrrrr, you guys with mechanical skills : ) Most of that aftermarket stuff need to be shipped from US, then if you not mechanically inclined you'll need to find shop you could trust and you might run into warranty and insurance problems. I'd rather have all of this form beginning from Toyota and enjoyed my boring truck even more: ) Last thing I want it to see is how 4Runners slide towards mall crawlers.

It just takes some guts to take the dive and some friends with experience to help you along. I have learned a TON since I joined the forum. But I see your point.

Is it the air injection system crap that's causing problems with the SC introduction?

I've set aside some cash for when it comes out because I want more power from my V6 TE.

Just sank a couple of bucks into the old girl to keep it comfy for the next couple of months since there is no way I am buying until the dust is settled and the info is out there and not just rumor.
Very disappointed in the lack of engine/tranny changes as my main gripe is the anemic acceleration from stop. I am also coming from a perspective of a supercharged 3.4 with 4.30s. Slightly less power, but it gets to the ground a lot better.

I trust you will take many pictures!?
Absolutely!

I did and one TRD guy said it's because of emissions problems and wouldn't pass with new laws.......Probably thank Calif for that!......Ted Moncure who heads up the SC program is expected in town today and I'll have more info.
I havn't seen Gadget or his SC'd 4runner here yet either to ask him questions on his SC production.

Same question I asked about the new air injection pump and they said it was not passing new emissions laws in general causing the delay.

These came right from Toyota Corporate.

Yeah, I mean you are so close to the release date of the new model might as well wait and see it all with your own eyes and then decide.

Absolutely!

Well that kind of sucks, but was expected. Don't you have another assignment, like taking pictures of the '14 :)

Thanks for the update, have fun out there!

There are many turbo or super charged vehicles sold from the factory by various manufacturers. If Toyota wanted to do it, it would already be done. They obviously don't. Look at what Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and BMW offer, as they seem to be the leaders in turbo-charged engines.

And how many of those were engines that weren't designed with forced induction in mind from the beginning? That is the major difference. TRD S/Cs have never been factory.
