well technically if you were actually following the proper car distance 17ft (1 vehicle length - 201 inches) wouldnt matter cause you should have a cushion of around 6+ car lengths at 55.

I haven't an idea how trailer sway control works, but my impression was that the '10-'13 have no kind of TSC. The '14 will have it.
 
Toyota push this? Push what ?. The official word from Toyota is this is a 5th Gen Refresh.Toyota Has not referred to this as the 6th Gen.

An online article said "improved trailer sway control". The video says they "added trailer sway control". Pre-'14 4Runnners don't have any trailer sway control. I'd imagine they do it using the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect sway and damp it using brakes/throttle. One of the few items the Explorer had that the 4Runner didn't. We've already ordered our '14, but I'm glad it is going to come with TSC!

I just slow down when a nut is too close behind, as I have to be able to stop for both of us. When I had my 1996 Impala SS, which probably looked like a grandpa car or taxi to many of the fools, I'd sometimes then just leave them in the dust when traffic opened up. Great fun. The 5.7 V8 might be fun, but the fuel mileage penalty would take away much of that fun.

Lexus GX to be phased out in CY 2016. Ugh, not looking good for us with a 6th generation.

I'm not so sure that means anything for the 4runner. The Land Cruiser Prado is also built on this frame and there very popular. Plus the 4runner sells were as the GX doesn't.
 
Good gosh, could they possibly have been more negative? Is the Grand Cherokee really that much better? Perhaps Toyota didn't pay them enough money? I don't think I've ever read a more negative review of the 4runner.

You must have missed the Consumers Reports review of the 2010 4runner if you think that was negative.
 
i just bought a 2013 4runner (black premium). i was holding off till the redesign, but after i saw it, i passed.the only things ill possily be interested in are the tails, and the oem wheels (since im a factory wheel nut LOL). i will say a retrofitted front end (10-13) looks way the hell better then the new front end.
 
The report has valid points

The 4-Runner drive train really is obsolete technology. Toyota has great components to place in the 4-Runner, but has elected not to give the 4-runner customers the best they have to offer. They could easily drop the Lexus GX 460 drive train into the 4-runner and probably get close to the same gas milage or maybe better. The GX 460 gets 20MPG on the highway and is significantly heavier. In my opinion, Toyota knows that 4-runner customers have few choices, so they will only make minor changes to maximize their profits. Yes, I am very disappointed with Toyota for not giving us the best technology in the 4-runner, but I have owned many 4-runners with my choice is driven by reliability, not performance factors. If the Jeep reliability goes up, we may soon have a little competition, since the performance factor are really better in the grand Cheroke except for proven reliability.

OK, a couple things here.....first of all, Toyota has very plainly stated the 4runner is meant to be a back-to-basics SUV, not a luxury vehicle. They told us this in '10 when the 5th gen launched. Even the Limited is a luxury PACKAGE and not meant to be a Lexus equivalent. Second, Toyota has a certain price-point to meet. Unlike Jeep, they actually have to make a profit and maintain the very high quality the 4runner is known for.

Look at 4runner prices in the past 20 years. A 3rd gen cost $35k or more when it was new. So, essentially, the 4runner has gone down in price over the years when inflation is considered. Because of this, Toyota has to cut cost somewhere and I think they've chosen wisely. If you want more luxury/ gizmos the GX Is available for the same money as a equally-equipped JGC Overland.

You're also not considering that CAFE standards and projected consumer demanding have a big part to play in the decision not to offer a V8

1) weight has very little to do with highway fuel economy. Aerodynamics and torque around 2k RPM (and thus the ability to stretch out the gearing) have more impact on fuel economy... especially on the EPA test. The 4Runner would likely get 20mpg highway despite lower weight. Weight impacts rolling resistance drag which is not much compared to aero drag at highway speeds. Weight does kill your city mileage.

2) The 1GR is every bit as advanced as a Coyote 5.0 or the Jeep Pentastar. Dual VVT, roller rocker valve train, light weight oil, etc. The only thing we lack is ratios in the gearbox.

3) if you checked out consumer reports, the 4Runner is as fast as an Ecoboost F150, as fast as the JGC V8 (pre 8 speed), faster than the JGC V6 (pre 8 speed), and just as efficient. On the specsheet, the 4Runner is outclassed; in reality, it all works together very well. If you want to buy based on a spec sheet rather than what is the best on the street and off the pavement, by all means, that is your choice. I'm interested to see the new numbers for the Jeep via Consumer Reports rather than the easily gamed EPA tests.

4) Every engineering decision is a compromise. The 4Runner, being Japan built, has to do what they can to keep the cost down. They aren't being built by UAW newbies for $15/hr and parts sourced from Mexico. Given $xxxxx to build the truck, they know that Toyotas sell on the reputation of unparalleled reliability. To ensure that these are still on the road in 20 years rather than the scrapyard, Toyota spends their money on more robust components and less of their money on things that aren't as value added to your midsize, BOF SUV buyer. Maybe Toyota's internal testing showed little fuel economy improvement but was an absolute wildcard in the reliability game. Would you say that the 5AT was a bad call given that data and the customer's expectation of reliability?

5) the development of the 4Runner is very sensitive. Yes, they could offer the 5.7L and 6AT. They may also only have capacity for 45k 4Runners to the US each year. Adding the V8 to the 4Runner may cost a lot more than they can get payback because of capacity limitations. (Note: the 4Runner has yet to have cash on the hood other than $1000 in certain regions right after pedal gate.) If they spent that money, they get a few more sales, but the 4Runner project is now a loser money wise, the 4Runner dies for the next gen. The GX exists if you need a V8. When it dies, we might see the V8 come back to the 4Runner, but right now, it doesn't make sense to spend loads of money to develop something only 10% of buyers are demanding. If 4Runner production moved to the US with Tundra and Tacoma, the chicken tax would fall off, cost to manufacture goes way down, and they could afford to offer more things. I'm sure that would piss off the "Japan only Toyota" folks, though.

Direct injection, a 6 or 7 speed transmission, and work on the aerodynamics could likely get another few mpg.

The F150 is at least 1000 lbs heavier than the 4Runner and has a much larger frontal area (aerodynamic drag is a function of frontal area). And yet the F150 gets similar mpg. That right there shows you that the 4Runner fuel economy isn't up to par.

Ford is reportedly working to cut 700 lbs out of the next F150.

The GX exists if you need a V8. When it dies, we might see the V8 come back to the 4Runner, but right now, it doesn't make sense to spend loads of money to develop something only 10% of buyers are demanding.

With the upcoming CAFE regulations, I don't see a V8 in the 4Runner's future. But I do hope that Toyota addresses the 4Runner's subpar fuel economy.

While I'm sorry to hear the GX may be discontinued, I can't help but think that opens the door for an improved 4Runner.

The GX placed a bunch of limitations on the 4Runner, because it was the upscale halo version. If the GX is gone, then the features that made the GX better can be placed on the 4Runner.

If current loyal GX buyers, no longer have a GX to buy the next logical choice would be a 4Runner Limited which would increase 4Runner customer base and help to keep the platform profitable while offering options like V8, 6-Speed, etc.

There is no Chicken Tax on the made in Japan 4Runner because it's a four-door SUV. In 1989 the U.S. Customs Service ruled that imported four-door SUVs are classified as passenger vehicles, which are not subject to the Chicken Tax, while imported two-door SUVs are classified as light trucks, which are subject to the Chicken Tax. The Chicken Tax is the reason, and not lack of sales, why 1989 was the last model year for the two-door 4Runners and Pathfinders. In contrast, the two-door Ford Explorer Sport and its rebadged twin the Mazda Navajo came on the market in 1991. Because they were domestically manufactured they were not subject to the Chicken Tax.

Good call. I was incorrect there. US manufacturing would reduce cost substantially.

As for the F150, despite the EPA ratings helped out with super tall final drives that no one buys, Fuelly confirms that people average 16 mpg in the newer F150s while 18 is the average on newer 4Runners. Given that they have near identical 0-60 and quarter mile times, that sounds about right.

Ford is getting sued for sandbagging the EPA tests with their Cmax and Fusion. I'm sure their "EPA ratings at all cost" mentality carries over to the F150 project even if they are nearly impossible to recreate unless you live in Ohio and only drive 60mph. In the end, physics wins. Heavy, fast, brick shaped vehicles will drink down the gas. Make them slower (downsize the engine or go diesel or hybrid) or make them smaller. We're well approaching diminishing returns. We'll probably see DI and huge weight reduction when gas prices go up, but gas still isn't expensive enough for high cost solutions to make a lot of sense. We were just spoiled with ridiculously cheap gas for so long.
