2014 4Runner

I hear so much about how cross overs/CUVs/Unibody SUVs are move fuel efficient then BOF SUVs, however every CUV I have ever compared my 4runner to gets about the same, if not slightly worse then my 4runner. It even gets better FE then some of the more sporty midsize sedans, G35/37 for example.

Really the only thing that CUVs have over BOF SUVs are that they are cheaper to produce, have more interior room, and they have more "Car Like" handling, which personally for me is not a benefit.

Several CUV's get upper 20's highway, some are at 30 mpg...

The issue is getting that mileage and still being a good off road vehicle, I think the Eco Diesel Grand Cherokee will be a good start. The Touareg TDi gets awesome mileage but has no low gearing and has wheels/tires/ground clearance not setup for off road.

Any idea when the 14's are going to be available? According to some of these posts they haven't even rolled off the assembly line? I put a deposit on one at my local dealer, he said he was able to pre order one. Without any pricing or availability I'm beginning to think he's yanking my chain just to keep me on the hook. Any thoughts?

I have read several places in September, and prices will be announced just prior to availability.

The Kia Sorento/Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Escape, Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4...

When you get to midsize crossover you end up with slightly better mpg's but a lot more interior space and better handling. The new Pathfinder for example does an honest 25-26 mpg highway, and has a large interior.

The diesel option is expensive because every SUV that offers it considers it a premium option and attaches it to a premium package. If you could get a base model with a diesel option, it would be not nearly as expensive. The point is it allows the same performance, and much higher mpg's. I would love to see the mpg numbers with the emissions equipment removed and a intake/exhaust/tune.

Isn't that one crazy?! We thought the exact same thing! CUV's and crappy gas mileage is one of the reasons we ended with a Jetta Sportwagen. Which, by the way, is an awesome car for the money!

Isn't it a $4500 upgrade in the JGC when comparing the same trim lines? (versus the V6 pentastar)

Fuelly says yes.

Fuelly's number are combined mpg, not highway mpg!

Touareg TDI V6 - Combined: 23 MPG, City: 20 MPG, Highway: 29 MPG
2014 Subaru Forester - Combined: 23 MPG, City: 21 MPG, Highway: 27 MPG
CRV - Combined: 25 MPG, City: 22 MPG, Highway: 30 MPG

Each of these CUVs meets or exceeds it's EPA combined mpg ratings on Fuelly. So that means that they should also meet or exceed their EPA highway mpg ratings when driven solely on the highway.

I think you'd have to compare histogram to histogram to see the upper (highway) and lower (city) extents. Consumer Reports also has pretty good data on your typical max and min mileage capability.

Yea the spindle grille is kinda like the 2014 4runner front grille, you either love it or you hate it. For some reason I like it, but can't figure why.

Thanks for posting. The reviewers are not particularly accurate though funny and its nice to see real life vids. Looking forward to seeing one in person soon.

Most interested in the new interior trim and feel we're hearing about. Still haven't driven a trail with KDSS in the 5th gen and hoping that gives the handling and comfort combination I am looking for that most closely resembles the onroad manners of the old X-Reas. Trail in silver would be the most likely replacement for my 05. A Limited of course would have the best road manners but its too ritzy for my parking spot.

I test drove a Trail with KDSS a month ago. A few months prior I drove the FJ and wanted too see the differences. The 4Runner was so much nicer. Steering was tight, drove smooth, and the brakes were great. Also a very quiet cabin. Really makes me want one. I love new interior changes of the 2014 model, the Trail nose, not so much. Maybe it won't look as crappy in real life... I may buy by the end of the year...

My 06 Sport with XREAS handled better, not much, but better. If you don't plan to lift, or go offroad, stick with the Limited.
