2014 4Runner

Inferno red, black, and white. Funny thing is, I stopped by my local Toyota stealership today checking out a 2014 T4R. Many of the sales guys haven't even heard they were coming out with the Pro Series.
Thanks for reply, hoping to hear a green or gold color made the list...

Looks like you (and sandcrawler) may be right. Just found out Nfab is having production issues with their rock rails. I had Schrockworks on my Xterra. I cancelled the Nfab's today and ordered the schrockworks dimpled tread plate sliders for my 4Runner, which I like better anyway. The bad part is the wait starts over again... and I had three months in already. :frusty:
Hmm not sure .095" tubing is going to take much abuse. Most of the actual protective tubing over .125", shrockworks uses .134".

So you are saying that you believe thin wall narrow tube will take more force than thick wall large diameter tubing? This mechanical engineer is going to beg to differ...

I did not say that. Please read again the second part of my statement.

Everything comes down to a compromise between maximum strength and light weight.

NASCAR mandates 1.75" diameter, .095" wall DOM mild steel tubing in it's cars. I built and raced dirt track stock cars for 10 years, and always used this size or 1.5" tubing. Some of the other local racers used Schedule 40 tubing, which while being cheaper and still allowed by local rules also has a weight penalty attached. Their cars were 15-20% heavier than mine when all was said and done, but my car was no less safe than what they built. And it handled better.

As Eddiebx pointed out above, the attachment points are just as important as the materials used. If the Nfab slider only attaches at the step bar locations the first time it takes a decent hit you are looking at sheet metal damage to the underside of the body. If however, it has 2 or 3 attachment points on the frame (triangulation) in addition to those step locations, it will be much better supported. Either way, that thin wall tubing is attached at 3 points out at the step at a minimum, leaving at most 2' between support points. .095" wall tubing should be plenty strong for that short length.

Or we could go with 2" square tubing with a .250" wall thickness that just flat won't bend. Of course you'd be giving up 2" of suspension travel due to weight sag.

Please understand I am not trying to stir turds here. I am simply making a point that sometimes you have to weigh the advantages of an indestructible heavier piece with one that is "just strong enough".

:hiding:

I see what you are saying

.095" on 1 1/2" tubing is just as strong as .125" on 2 or 2 1/2" tubing.

This was all I was referring to, not many ways to take this. But I see you mean that it will hold up just as well. I just like to err on the side of caution when it comes to my ability to be stupid off-road. I'm 90% positive I'll end up in some youtube #fail video one of these days.

well after 3 months of searching... i'm happy to say I have finally joined the 5th gen 4R group! I love this SUV!!! It's a huge upgrade from my 97 4R.

attached a pic of my old 4R with the new one. the new ones have grown...

Looks great and my how they've grown!!! I'd say that about trucks in general, everything getting bigger and bigger with each progressive generation.

Damn, I never thought there was such a stock size difference between my 3rd and these 2014's. Wicked... I'm heading to the dealership, (after hours).., definately taking a photo of my lifted girl next to a stocker... must be close. Amazing that SR5's with the same options (leather and moon roof) are only a few grand more than what I paid for mine 14 years ago.... Soon I'll own both.:bluejump:

Love how you parked in a Compact parking spot. :lookout:

It's interesting how the 5th gen dwarfs the 3rd gen in this picture. The 1st time I washed my 5th gen was when I realized the reality of the size difference hit over my 3rd gen. But this picture makes it look like a toy!

Do you guys hear a 1 per engine revolution "whomp-whomp" noise (for the lack of better description :) specially during idle? Its well pronounced on 2014 Limited :( louder during initial start up for the day and can be heard distictively at stop lights :(

I've been hoping that as the Runner gets more miles it'll go. Have about 2400 miles now.

I second that noise at idle (lower pitched deeper thump but otherwise almost diesel-esque). If it's not a word then I declare the rights to it.

weather finally broke yesterday, a little plasti dip action...

Looks great man I have been debating doing this to my 2014 sr5. Mainly cause I think they pretty good looking wheels for factory ride, and should look pretty good dipped.

Pretty normal guys - it's not a quiet motor. There was lots of discussion early-on, and diesel-esque is good.

The old (left) and the new (right, duh). Soon to have new rubber.
