2014 FJ Summit Official Roster.

Well, it's 5 months away but there is a lot to be done between now and then.

So let's get a list of who is going, what your driving, and what questions or concerns you may have.

There are several people on here that have been at least once, and I have been all but year one.

I will likely do a sponsored run over the scenic Imogene Pass again this year for the T4R crowd.

Every year we take a different vehicle, this year is no different, we will be taking our newly acquired 2010 TE. We have 5 month to finish the build, not even sure exactly how we are going to build it yet.

So lets talk getting ready, being prepared and what to expect, along with what mods you want to finish before you head out.

As it gets closer we may consider setting up a westbound convoy.

If you can catch Black Bear when it does not have a group on it in front of you, it's more fun. Last year we waited just under 2 hours for a group of FJs to go so we could drop in....

I have done it 3 or 4 times, but never with Crawl Control, I may try that this year...

I may try a few non sanctioned trails this year too. I am more into exploring and seeing the country than technical trails (not that they are that technical).

If you want a nice long country drive, enter engineers pass and take alpine loop around and then south to Silverton. It takes the better part of a day, but the views are amazing and there is a great BBQ place in Silverton you can treat yourself to when you finish.

FJSummit 2013 National Meet

I just booked our cabin yesterday, I recommend this site if you want a good deal on lodging. I usually stay at The Hotel Telluride for the first several days, but it runs about $325 a night during Summit.


I rented a condo/cabin this year for 180 a night, IMO, the best way to go, and best part it is in the center of Ouray.

Now that's funny- center of a town that is 7 streets by 8 streets large.

The Alpine loop is a good run, I did it 2 years ago.

I'll doubtless be there since I haven't missed one yet, and I'm only a little over two hours away. I'll probably drive the 4R since the Redline boys will probably trailer my FJ there to show it off. I'll track you down and we can do some runs together. Schaefer will probably be staying with me again as well (I think he's on the cover of one of the Toyota off-road magazines this month……I need to check and see which one).

I am looking forward to seeing your FJ.. I'm a 4runner guy but I'm pretty sure I am going to pick up an FJ in the fall to work on over the winter. I suspect I will take away some ideas from yours.

1. Is this a kid friendly event? I have a 7 year old and a 3 year old. Can they go on the trail rides too?

2. Can my 2008 4runner with the mods in my sig ( and a few more) handle these trails ok? I've wheeled quite a bit around NM but never in CO. I am hoping to get away with minimal trail damage.

3. My wife and kids are city slickers, where is a nice place to stay nearby?

The Summit is family friendly, there are lots of kids attending and I have not seen any there that was not having a great time.

The trails are kid friendly too. Most of the trails are pretty easy to moderate. Your rig will be fine. I don't recall seeing skid plates in your signature. Skids are always a good idea on most trails. Something to think about.

should be a nice drive from CA that time of year. I normally drive from TX so its 110 degrees+ when I leave and by the time I hit CO I'm in heaven. This year I will be leaving from Ohio, so the drive should bee pleasant all the way through.

1. I have a 3-5 and 15 year old that go, I have and at least one of my boys with me every time I go. They do a special raffle for the kids at the event and there are several kid (and parent) fun things to do in the area.
In Ouray there is the mine tour, its 10-15 bucks per person and its just on the North end of Ouray. my boys enjoyed it quite a bit. there is a playground in the KOA, a water park at the north end of town, and a couple ice cream shops on the main drag. When you go over Blackbear, or Imogene you end up in Telluride. Telluride is great for kids also because they have the free gondola rides up over the mountain and then down into mountain city. there is plenty of tourist shops when you stop in mountain city, and another playground just south 100 yards of the gondola. The trails for the most part are not white knuckle, the kids will likely fall asleep at some point on them since they take so long.

2. Trail damage is not too much of an issue in CO... Falling 2500 feet..well that may be a small risk. you may consider some undercarriage armor and make sure you have a good spare, the rocks on many of the trails can be very unforgiving. I will go back and add this to my first post but here are some things to keep in mind, especially with kiddos.
A. In the mountains the air is very thin and you can sunburn in a VERY short amount of time so bring sun screen.
B. depending on the melt, it can (and usually is) very cold and dry on the mountain, so bring warm weather gear even if it is not cool when you leave camp in the morning. also some sort of lotion and chap stick is a must, the air can dry you out like an old sock.
C. Check my first post for recommended safety gear. (i will update it here in about 10 min)

3. I have stayed in several places in Ouray and Telluride. Check out this site... I used it this year to book a condo in the park in Ouray. very affordable and very good for city slickers like my wife (from NY)
