2014+ Post Pictures Of Your BBQ Grilling Area

It was definitely more than my cast iron, but the fun is eating right off the hot rock, every bite cooked to perfection :hungry:

I know you are just the slightest bit curious. A few Asian restaurants offer hot rock cooking right at your table. Definitely worth a try. I tried to find a decent video, but youtube seems to be full of people completely overcooking and ruining their steaks.

Huh. So is there an element inside the thing keeping it hot?

Nope its all in the stone. Rocks absorb heat very well, and a steak stone will radiate heat useful for cooking for about 30 minutes after you pull it off the grill or oven. You can also regulate precisely how hot you would like the stone to be(just setting the over temp), so you can sear various types of meat, fish and vegetables without overcooking.

You could probably make one for yourself out of a piece of granite to try it out(I went for the retail lava rock because if you heat a rock with any fissures, soft spots or moisture in it, heating can cause it to explode). But the only difference between this and a pizza/baking stone is its about 2 inches thick so it retains heat for a longer amount of time. Sure, its more of a novel way to cook but its entertaining as hell

Charcoal FTW!

I was excited to get the big grill last year, but honestly I use the baby Weber most of the time! Less charcoal, cooks better, heats up quicker.

I take the little guy camping too!

Hahaha!!

I know what you mean, my baby Webster gets all the attention, it's the first thing to get packed and the first to get unpacked when camping...well...okay maybe not the first thing unpacked I mean it ain't camping unless a cold one is in my hand! My girlfriend always laughs at me when I pitch a tent with one hand...lol

Brian, that might be the cleanest grill I have ever laid eyes on outside of a retail store. If you saw mine you would cry. 2 years of rowdy roommates who never clean the grease trap(or any other part for that matter), and who never wanted to pay to refill the propane has taken its toll.
The good news: soon no roommates so I can actually keep it in a presentable condition.
The better news: I bought a Steak Stone a couple months ago and I must say its one of the best purchases I've made so far this year. You can heat the stone up to 600ish, it sears in the juices and flavor, and you pretty much cant overcook your free range grass fed slice of delectable goodness.

So until greener pastures in the next month or so, I present to you all my personal indoor lava stone grilling station:

Why dont you just use a cast iron skillet?

The Weber Performer. Propane light assist, makes charcoal grilling easy. Side table, charcoal bin...pure awesome. I can do anything on it, from searing steaks to a low and slow brisket.

Its a different cooking and eating method. You heat the stone in the oven and then throw your steak on to sear both sides and continue to cook to your preference while you eat right off the stone. You can slice and sear individual bites. Once you try it there's just no comparison to cooking a steak on a skillet and eating it while it cools off.

There's a local brewery restaurant that has a steak with DIY cook Turkish stone, always wanted to try it. Similar to Korean BBQ with the DIY propane grill table center.

Few quick shots. Picked the grille up last spring for $50...quite possibly my greatest Craigslist find ever. Grilled just about everything on here....very easy to throw a packet of wood chips under the grates for some nice smoke and flavor.

Finally got my new-to-me grill hooked up to the natural gas and got things situated. I've got plans to do a little extension off the deck just for the grill and a side counter with a nice piece of granite I just picked up cheap. Till then it's cramped but works.

Did a heat test with it as soon as I got it, 400* in one minute, 500 in just over two and burried past 700 in about 7 minutes. I had a nice thick bone-in ribeye and it turned out an amazing chicago style char crust with perfect rare interior. I don't prefer steak that way but it's cool to know it can do it. Been using it almost every day now.

The old Chargrill, she's got some age on her, but still fits the bill.

Been using the hell out of the grill lately. Very easy to control temp, and the flavor we've been getting is amazing.

Those photos are making my mouth water. Which reminds me. I open the door each morning to an empty patio and its depressing. I need a grill: preferably charcoal, mainly to one up BrianSD_42, but also because I NEED TO GRILL before I die from withdrawals.
I've been looking at Kamado style grills:

Big Green Egg

Does anyone have any experience with these? I'm at that point in my life where I'm done buying cheap crap, I'm going to use this for many years to come but the $800ish price tag still sounds a bit much for what is essentially a thick ceramic grill. Anyone know about any alternative brands with a better price point? The ones that come up on a basic google search are priced roughly the same..

I'd compare specs online and feel in person but it's my understanding a lot of the Big Green Egg copycat's pale in comparison to their build quality.

The Big Green Egg is supposed to be awesome.

I ended up with the $149 Weber mainly due the price of the Big Green Egg which easily gets over $600.

Whatever you decide I'm sure it will work out great!
