Hmm. Any more details on this film you speak of?
My '15 gets a lot of use (91k and counting) and the windshield already looks like it's been sandblasted.
No issues yet really, but come the time I need to shop for a replacement, I'd love to find something that will hold up better than OEM.

It's just something I read on Facebook so I'm attempting to confirm with facts. My windshield is destroyed after last winter and I'm sure it's going to happen again next winter. I'll attempt the PPG glass and add a bug deflector and see if that improves survivability.

I'll give PPG a shot then. I'm not familiar with FUYAO so perhpaps that's a good thing. Moving to your town in July...spitting distance from Back East

My '16 TE (w/ window heater) just took a rock hit a few days ago in the lower-left area, with a 5"+ crack extending horizontally from the A-pillar.
State Farm no longer covers glass (other then under comprehensive), so I'm looking at paying a minimum of $500 out-of-pocket.
Anyone have recommendations/experience with windshield replacement in the Billings area?
I doubt I'll be able to afford OEM glass at the moment; I might see how long I can go before the crack spreads across the windshield.
It's nice that roads are "salted" like they are in MN/WI, but the damned rocks on the roads here kill windshields! :mad2:

I had a windshield replaced recently on a Volvo wagon we own by a local company, Plymouth glass in CT. They've been in business for years and have a great reputation. The installer who came to my house told me he was not allowed to install windshields alone until he had 2 years apprenticing and after 5 years, he could have a mobile service truck. I watched him do the work and was impressed at how careful he was and how technical the work is when done correctly.
He also explained I was fortunate to have a rain sensor because that meant I got a Pilkington windshield, which he said is the thickest and has the least distortion. He said PPG is good but not as high quality as it once was. They don't use any other brands unless there isn't an alternative.
My '16 limited has a crack and that's where I'm going to get it replaced.

Does anyone know exactly who manufacturers the OEM windshield?, Farmers is sending me to Safelite and they keep telling me PGW (used to be PPG I believe) glass is the exact same as OEM without the Toyota sticker on it. I went to my local Toyota dealer and the parts dept could not tell me who manufacturers the windshield.
If I go with PGW it will cost me $100 deductible, if I go OEM it will cost me another $350.
From what I read in other threads PGW is now LKQ as of 2016 and the quality is poor.
I looked at my OEM windshield and it says NSG DOT23. When I search this on a link given on another thread is says Nippon Sheet Glass Co. DOT23 Lamipane (Laminated), so the manufacturer is not PGW/LKQ?. Nippon Glass bought Pilkington in 2006, but Pilkington DOT563 is made by a Chinese outfit which is what others have had installed. So if I get the same DOT number then it will be the same I presume.

For what its worth I had a new windshield installed last month and I ended up going with the PGW Pittsburgh Glass Works (formerly PPG) and I am more than happy with it. Its clear and not wavy, the black outline pattern is slightly different than the OEM Toyota but other than the Toyota marking being replaced with PGW i cant tell any difference in optical clarity (to early to comment on durability but I cant see why it would be any different). I was in a similar position pay $50 ded for PGW or an additional $285 for Toyota. Also the Toyota dealer I originally purchased from doesnt even stock OEM windshields and subs out all replacements to the company I used which only use PGW glass.

I finally got a new windshield.
To re-cap, I had contacted Safelite as that was who Farmers worked with. Safelite told me that aftermarket glass was covered by insurance, OEM was not. Farmers would cover $453 towards an OEM and I would pay the rest which was approx $350.
Safelite could not tell me what exact glass I would be getting, it was OEM and that all glass is from the same place and the only difference is they slap a Toyota sticker on it. Between the office staff attitude and the bad reviews online I told them to forget it I would take my business elsewhere.
Contacted A+ Autoglass here in Mountain View, they would come to the house to install and they had great reviews online. They contacted the insurance and then told me they would install OEM at no cost. Now I am really wondering what glass I am getting. They told me they would order the glass through Toyota Palo Alto dealership parts dept using my VIN so I would get OEM. I visited the parts dept and they could give me a part no. but no other information.
When the guy showed to up install it was the exact same glass as came with the truck. Nippon Sheet Glass DOT23, even came with a little Toyota Made in Japan sticker. The cost of the glass was $637 so the total cost with labor and mouldings etc $913, all I paid was $100 deductible. The Toyota dealership told me the glass and labor through them would be approx. $1300.
I am not saying this glass is better than any other one but it was pissing me off no end that I really could not get any information on what I would be getting til it showed up nor did I have a choice in ordering from a specific manufacturer.
The trick I guess is to find the right shop to handle the insurance people.

Just replaced my OEM windshield after researching on here for guidance. The dot #23 lamipane was original, I replaced with Dot177 Pilkington and have been very satisfied. Pilkington owns many plants worldwide but the consensus seems to be to steer away from the Chinese ones so I specifically asked for non Chinese glass. Took 2 weeks to get, but hopefully worth the wait. Dot177 is made in Mexico. Mine also has the heated wiper elements and auto dimming mirror.
