2014 Starts then immediately dies

Went out to start my 2014 this morning. It started normally but instantly died. Tried to start again it only turned over strongly. Need to wait a few minutes and it will start again but instantly dies. I had my 80,000 mile service done last week, everything checked out ok according to the dealer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you have your battery disconnected? Could the ground be loose? When you disconnect then reconnect the battery the first time you start it the truck will die. can't help otherwise.

No, didn't do anything with the battery. Since the 80K service only driven normally.

Yes checked oil. It shows full on one side of stick, one qt low on other side of stick, after wiping and reinserting. The oil and check engine light stay on after engine dies. They changed oil, rotated tires, replaced air filters, did their usual multi point check.
 
Sounds like an MAF or fuel pump to me. My FJ did the same at 30K miles, and it was the pump. Is the MAF sensor connected? Just a thought, but do you have a spare key to try turning it over? What you're describing sounds a bit like an immobilizer disconnect as well. It's a long shot, but worth a shot... hopefully its something as simple as a chip key problem.

Thanks for all the help. I called the dealer and they had me disconnect and reconnect the battery negative terminal. The first time I tried to start it it died right away. After a few minutes it started and ran fine. The tech I talked to thinks its the immobilizer. I will take it in and let them have at it.

Now that you mention it someone else had the same issue and it WAS the immobilizer.

WTF? ^^^^

In case anyone is interested, I have had no further trouble. The service dept tech checked it over and found: "p1604 startability malfunction" "All systems are currently operating as designed. Unable to duplicate concern at this time" So they couldn't tell me why it happened. I guess I will make sure I have a 10mm socket wherever I go to disconnect the battery and reconnect. To clarify, I didn't disconnect the battery prior to the difficulty as some have asked.

It could be the immobilizer, though if it were acting up it shouldn't start the vehicle at all (the car would crank but no injector pulse/spark because it's no recognizing the key as valid). It's possibility it's glitching AFTER it's allowed the vehicle to start, but it's a rare occurrence.

Eh, that P1604 is a relatively useless DTC without context (i.e. better understanding of the issue or other DTCs to help clarify), it basically just means what it says "I didn't start exactly the way I was supposed to".

Any suggestions, other than to carry a 10mm socket for the battery disconnect/reconnect solution?

Is this Smart Key or Standard?

If it's Smart Key, do you have any other smart keys on your key chain (even it's it's an extra 4Runner key)? Do you have anything attached to the key chain that could be emitting a signal?

If it's a standard key, when you stick it into the key cylinder (not turn it, just stick it in) does the security light go out? If it doesn't go out it means the key is not recognized by the immobilizer for what ever reason.

I suppose you could try getting out of the vehicle, closing the door, hitting "Lock" waiting a second or two and then hitting "Unlock" and seeing if it works then? It's worth a shot to see if that "resets" the glitch your having?

The security light goes out when I insert the regular key. The truck seems to be working normally now, no further trouble.

Keep an eye out next time it's having an issue if the security light stays on when it's having the issue. That would point to an immobilizer issue.

But only thing you can do now is keep an eye on it unfortunately. :(
