i've got a 2014 T4R SR5 with 2200 mi on it. The last few days I have noticed that in the morning, for the first few miles of my trip, there is a faint knock when i'm stopped and my foot is on the brake with the car in D. It seems to go away if I switch it to N. Appears to be coming from the engine. After the first couple miles I could not hear it anymore. Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Most people can't delineate between the two, as a "knock" is just a lower pitched "tick." Where does a knock turn into a tick or vice versa? I treat them the same unless frequency and amplitude is mentioned.
Just the way he said it , sounds like a rod knock.

Just the way he said it??? You got rod knock from a slight engine noise that goes away after a few minutes? Never mind that almost every single one of us has a engine noise that happens on cold start and goes away after a few minutes and there have been countless thread on that subject. Never been a documented rod knock but you suggest it?

I have 350 miles on my 4runner I just picked up Monday. Once I start up I let the engine warm up until the rpms drop. Once I put it into reverse or drive the engine knocks for about 10 seconds. It's not the famous "tick" that some refer to because I have an 08 4runner that ticks. I'm scared now that I just picked up this 2014 limited and there is already an engine problem

For both of you with the "knock" sound. Getting a recording of it and posting it would help lots.
But also, in both cases, the truck is that new, take it back to the dealer and ask about it at least.
Mine developed a light tick sound at about 5k. Nothing that I would even come close to describing as a knock though, and nothing remotely close to concerning.

Wait is this happening on KDSS equipped 2014's??? Rumor has it they changed the KDSS cylinder in the 14's....:bounce:
In all seriousness to the OP, my 2014 does the same thing and I noticed it this morning too. From everything I have read, it is normal tick/tock/knock and all is well. Of course if my engine explodes like a JetBlue jet engine, I may have a very different opinion on the matter.
Dude relax it was just a guess or an opinion. We all have them and should be free to voice them without ridicule .This is a site for 4runner talk . My guess or question is as vaild as yours. I was addressing the OP and you felt you had to jump in and straighten me out for no reason.

Well I dropped the 4runner off at my dealership. I have a service appointment with the service manager first thing tomorrow morning. They're going to leave it there overnight and have me come in and start it up to see if we can replicate the sound.
The guy at the service department gave me a whole spiel about how "these new 4runners have forged piston heads which expand when the engine heats up"
"you're just hearing the the piston hit the cylinder wall due to the gap before the engine warms up causing the heads to expand. Its real common in these new cars"
So basically Piston slap......which according to toyota is completely normal

We had rod knock on our 2012 Camry 2.5 when fully warm like heat soak from in town driving upon acceleration it would be very noticeable from about 1-25 mph then calm down to where you wouldn't hear it. Sometimes people would hear us. Coming down the street!
I hear many Subaru's with the same sound and sometimes older cars that look to be on their way out. The 4.0 does have a noticeable rumble at idle in gear but that's normal engine sounds IMO.

I would not worry much about cold piston slap. You have two different metals that expand at different rates (the alum pistons and the iron sleeve of the cyl). There will be a mismatch in the bore until things get up to operating temp. If it continues and is really loud after the motor is warmed up then you might have something to worry about long term.
The dealership is just trying to make you happy. They won't do anything about it. These days, dealerships only do internal engine work when the piston drops out of the block.
BTW, Seriously doubt the pistons are forged. That would be heavy for a NA motor. Most modern motors use hypereutectic cast pistons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypereutectic_piston Might want to tell the guy at the dealer he is full of it and using the wrong terminology. However, it is common.

It's definitely a knock. The service manager has to start a case number and have an engineer come out and take a look at the 4runner to see if they can rectify the problem. With only 345 miles on the car and not even being a week old this shouldn't be happening. I'll be getting a loaner Monday. I'll keep everyone updated on here. I just hope the problem is solved. I'd hate to have to get a new 4runner because I already fell in love with the blizzard pearl and redwood interior.
