2014 TE Overhead Console Removal

Anyone know how to remove the overhead console in a 5th Gen 4Runner? I bought a new rear view mirror with auto-dim and Homelink buttons. The mirror fits on the windshield button perfectly, but now I need to do the wiring. I only need to hook up 3 wires: +12v on all the time; +12v switched; and ground. Should be no problem once that o/h console is down.

After searching for threads to do this, all I came up with was a really nice write-up for a 4th Gen T4R, and I still don't know what's needed to drop that o/h console. I tried a bit of gently pulling, but either the clips are pretty strong, or there's one or more hidden screws that need to be removed first.

So, had anyone else done this that can enlighten me as to what to do?

In the 10-13 it's pretty simple. There are two screws that you can see when you open the sunglasses holder. Take these out. Then pull the console down towards you. Unclip the harness and you're good to go.

Not sure about the 14. But it can't be that different.

No sunglasses holder on the Trail Edition. The TE has those two big switches for Crawl Control & Terrain Select instead. Do ya reckon those switches have to be removed first?

I'm trying to not break the new truck.

What more info do you need other than it's a 2014 TE??

OP, if I remember correctly on a '12 TE the controls for Crawl Control and Multi Terrain just pop out (pressure clips). It wasn't bad at all to pop that out. Once that's out you should see next steps - it's been a long time since I've had those out but I could go revisit it if you don't get any better answers.

THANK YOU!!! That was EXACTLY the "start" I needed. You're right, the knobs popped right out, revealing the two screws, so I think I'm good from here.

Is there an advantage to this new mirror? Just wondering because my '12 has auto-dim and the Homelink buttons are right above the crawl control knobs. If the Homelink buttons are lit on the new mirror, that would certainly be a plus.

Our new 2014 Trail (NOT the premium) came with the plain-Jane manual-dimming mirror, and no Homelink buttons at all. Likely due to cost-cutting, and to get buyers of the Trail Premium to believe they are getting more bang for their bucks besides sticky seats in the summer.

So for us, YES! We get an auto-dimming mirror AND Homelink buttons. I got the mirror off eBay for $75, as it was a take-off from a Subaru where the owner wanted an On-Star mirror instead. these mirrors are $250 if bought new from Gentex/Milo. New ones on eBay are $209.

The cable I ordered to connect-up the mirror should arrive tomorrow or Friday. I removed the o/h console this morning and believe I found a good spot to splice in the three wires for the mirror. I will verify with my multi-meter when I'm ready to splice, but the wires are in the big white connector that plugs into the o/h console.

Some Toyota models (Camry, Tundra, etc.) apparently have a 3-wire connector as part of the o/h wiring harness that you can just plug or splice into, but 4Runner owners are not so lucky. I may do a DIY thread with photos for others who want to add the same or similar mirror.

Interesting info. I had no idea that the the regular Trail came like that. Well good luck with the install! I'm sure there will be people in the future that would appreciate a write up if all goes smoothly.

Just installed a Gentex Genk41 this weekend. Very simple. Remove two screws and pull down the console (as mentioned earlier in the thread). 12v constant is a red wire in the overhead harness. Ground is a while wire. Route the long wire down the driver side pillar to the kick panel and there is a black switched 12v wire on the harness behind the kick panel. Be sure to use your DMM and or test light to verify the wires. Otherwise, the mirror installs without any mods.

How much pressure did you use to remove the Crawl Control and Multi Terrain knobs? The dials on my 2014 TE seem pretty secure. I don't want to break anything on my 2 week old truck.

I didn't have to use very much pressure. There is a slot at the front where you can use a slim panel pry tool.
