I didn't have to use very much pressure. There is a slot at the front where you can use a slim panel pry tool.

thanks, I think I was looking at your pic of your console, did you have to pull the dials off to loosen the console? I was trying to pull those off first...

Our new 2014 Trail (NOT the premium) came with the plain-Jane manual-dimming mirror, and no Homelink buttons at all. Likely due to cost-cutting, and to get buyers of the Trail Premium to believe they are getting more bang for their bucks besides sticky seats in the summer.

So for us, YES! We get an auto-dimming mirror AND Homelink buttons. I got the mirror off eBay for $75, as it was a take-off from a Subaru where the owner wanted an On-Star mirror instead. these mirrors are $250 if bought new from Gentex/Milo. New ones on eBay are $209.

The cable I ordered to connect-up the mirror should arrive tomorrow or Friday. I removed the o/h console this morning and believe I found a good spot to splice in the three wires for the mirror. I will verify with my multi-meter when I'm ready to splice, but the wires are in the big white connector that plugs into the o/h console.

Some Toyota models (Camry, Tundra, etc.) apparently have a 3-wire connector as part of the o/h wiring harness that you can just plug or splice into, but 4Runner owners are not so lucky. I may do a DIY thread with photos for others who want to add the same or similar mirror.

In case anyone is interested to know which wires you ended up splicing if you have KDSS w/o moonroof. its the green (+) and white/black (-) wires. If you want a constant 12v for homelink, go ahead and tap into the blue wire. I wanted to avoid any chance of my battery draining so I just tapped the homelink/auto-dimming to a 12v accessory. Worked like a charm.

so where does the original harness plug from the factory mirror go to? can you trace that harness and just tap into that?

Digging up and older thread here, most relevant to my question. Once I pulled my overhead, I noticed that there appeared to be a second unused harness up there, maybe for the moonroof and homelink in the TEP? Before I tried pulling things apart, I wanted to make sure a) It was indeed extra, and not powering anything currently, and b) Is there power to it?

i need to remove the console to get something mounted at the back, is it just the screw at the front then it pops off?
