2014 Trail - Bluetooth Issues

When I bought this 4Runner I had an iPhone 5s. The bluetooth worked wonderfully. After a while I changed phones to the Note 3. The bluetooth worked ok for a while, but the text messages wouldn't come through like it did on the iPhone. Other than that it worked fine. Heck, even with my wife's new S5 it was saving the FM radio favorites when her phone synced... which I thought was weird, cause when I connected it didn't have the favorites anymore. (a whole other problem.....)

Recently, which happened to be after my Note 3 and her S5 updated, the bluetooth isn't really working for shit. Her phone will connect and then just randomly disconnect.

Anyone else having this issue or know how to fix it????

I had an issue that sounds the same in my 2010 Trail. It happened to me when changing from an S4 to a HTC One M8. I was able to resolve the issue, I did so by deleting ALL phones from the menu in the 4Runner, and starting over like it was new. Hope that is the fix for you as well.
 
Just a heads up. I was able to replace the head unit through warranty. This fixed the problem I had with the FM Presets not saving. Now they work perfectly. I now have a problem with the bluetooth dropping out if the phone is in my pocket, under my leg, or in the passenger seat. It's like the bluetooth isn't strong enough. If I set it on the center console it works just fine.... not very happy with this crap... I called the service person I worked with and left a message. I'll be sure to reach out again in the morning.

Getting old driving back and forth to the dealer to work on this shit.

Anyone have any suggestions for aftermarket head units on the 2014 4Runners?

Wow. I have no idea about aftermarket, but when I was out in the woods at Jambo I had a reason to call someone while I was about 50 feet away from the running 4R, and I heard the bluetooth pickup. I had to either disconnect the call or run like hell to talk at the truck. This with an iPhone 5. The problem may not be vehicle related from your initial description.

my phone connected to the 4runner while I was having an alignment done, It was pretty far from me. I have a Note 3, but every company has the potential to put out a bad one now and then, I would test others phones with your 4runner, and test your phone on other vehicles to try and find out which device might have the issue.

Had this issue with my Toyota Avalon - has nothing to do with the Head Unit itself more about the Bluetooth and software on the phone. For me the fix was the 5.0 update for my Samsung S5.

Interestingly enough my daughters Nissan had the same exact issue until the phone software was upgraded.

I had the same problem with the radio not saving stations. I have the 2014 SR5. The dealer did a software update and it fixed the problem. Now the radio saves stations.
 
I had the same issue with my old Civic. For the most part the bluetooth would work properly for streaming audio, but when placing calls it would bounce constantly lose connectivity.

I found 3 things that seemed to fix the issues:

1.) Remove all paired devices from vehicle's memory
2.) Remove all "remembered" paired devices from the phone itself
3.) Try a clean install on your phone. Sometimes stuff gets corrupted.
 
I'm having a problem with my Bluetooth. I have an older Sprint HTC Touch pro2.
When I try to answer in coming calls with the steering wheel controls the phone starts ringing through my speakers and will not answer the call. It has answered incoming call a couple times but that's it, I found it will answer in coming calls if I use the radio touch screen though.
Out going calls are fine. Anybody else have this type of issue?
 
It happened to me when changing from an S4 to a HTC One M8.

I will be taking the 4Runner back to the dealership Monday at lunch. I will update if they have a fix. I'm almost thinking that the Bluetooth isn't hooked up right in the head unit itself. Will update you on Monday after I talk to the dealership.

Before doing anything drastic. Try to change the connection option on the Head Unit for the Android phone to connect from phone rather than connect from HU.
 
I've had zero issues with mine, if anything I experience more annoyance at how far the Bluetooth reaches compared to my ear piece when i'm in the field. Tend to end up running towards the 4Runner.

I would like to point out after the Note 4 update to 5.0 and the Entune (Toyota update) it was doing weird things. During my ARB bumper install I had my battery disconnected for about a week and when I re-connected it actually fixed 100% of my 'weird' quirks for lack of a better description.
 
2 head units later the FM presets are working fine and the bluetooth has no issues.... not sure what was wrong, but they don't mess with it. They just order a new head unit. Also my 4Runner doesn't have Entune.

Odd that they replaced the head unit... But whatever works I suppose.

I can't remember if the 4Runners use Entune or not (not that it matters, you can still find a software version number that should be useful for cross referencing,) but basically a majority of the issues I myself tend to see are related to the head unit software becoming outdated when customers start using newer phones/newer phone OS. Every dealership should have a stack of USB drives to update the head units as issues arise; it's typically the first step in diagnosing the issue; before you end up calling Toyota and letting them make the judgement call to replace the head unit or not.

Basically these head units are very much like your computer, don't keep them updated and they don't work well. The tricky part is going to be when the vehicle is out of warranty as I don't know how we handle software upgrades out of warranty...
 
So now if my Note 3 is connected and we connect her S5 instead the Bluetooth drops her phone... Bout to be pissed. When I take it in I will recommend updating the head unit software instead of ordering a 3rd one to replace it.
