2014 Trail Overhead Console wiring options

Hey there,

New 5th Gen Trail owner. I'v done some snooping and searching but have no definitive answer so I am hoping someone can provide some insight.

Just got my GenTex Frameless w/Homelink (50-genk80a) mirror and I am getting ready to install both this unit and my Escort live direct wire kit.

I took apart the overhead console and couldn't find any concrete indication of +12v (switched) +12v (constant) and a suitable ground. Can anyone help? Or point me to a 2014 TE thread if I missed it.

Also, i noticed the wires that are used by Toyota are extremely thin. Has anyone had any luck using wiretaps on these wires? Any issue?

I appreciate the help and apologize if my search skills are lacking. This forum is pretty massive (at least relative to the Mini Cooper forum I frequent).

I have a Escort 8500 blue on both of mine, with the Escort live direct wire kit on my 5th gen. I ran the wires down the A-pillar, along the factory harness, used a add-a-circuit fuse tap (like this: ATM Mini-Fuse Tapa Circuit? Dual Fuse Holder - Wirthco Engineering, Inc.) on a key on fuse in the fuse box above the e-brake, and grounded to the body behind the kick panel. I put the Escort live module in the small cubby in front of the shifter. There are a couple pics in my build thread. I didn't even look for a power source in the overhead console.

if you can find the repair manual (posted in several places here) there is an excellent wiring diagram.
provided you get the appropriate size of wire taps, they will work, but cut-solder-insulate is a much better method if you have the room to work in.

Thanks! For some reason I missed that link in the original posting. Anyways, this is how I hooked up my homelink mirror.

Pop out the Crawl/Terrain dials (pry from edge closest to windshield)
Disconnect harness and then remove the 2 exposed bolts
There are two clips above the light bults, so apply straight downward pressure and the console will pop out.

Using the main overhead console SU1 plug
17 - Black / White - Ground
4 - Blue - Constant Power
5 - Green - ACC

So, did you add a Homelink mirror? By tapping into the OH Console wiring, did you avoid running wiring down the A pillar? Thanks, I have a '15 TE non premium.

Yup, I tapped the above wires into a home link mirror from an Infiniti.

I know it has been a while but do you remember what size gauge the wire is in the overhead console? I was thinking about installing one of the Gentex GENK8A frameless mirrors in my '15 Trail and wasn't sure what size t-tap to buy. Thanks for your help.
