2015 Inferno TRD Pro Build Plans

Hello All,

My new Inferno TRD Pro should be hitting the dealership in the next few weeks so I'm trying to get my plans together on the modifications that I am going to make since it looks like many will take a while to fabricate. I have decided to go with a Gobi Ranger roof rack and have HeftyFabWorks build the dual swing out rear bumper, sliders, and the front bumper with winch. They haven't done a front bumper on the newer stye 4Runner yet, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

I like the idea of having the bumpers and sliders made out of aluminum so I don't have to deal with rust issues. This is likely a highly divisive question, but what are your thoughts on going this route rather than steel? I'm not going to be doing anything super crazy, but I would like to use it on a lot of the trails out here in Colorado as well as Moab, and some trips I have planned from here up into Alaska next year.

I haven't put too much though into the lighting yet, but have started looking. Are there any other upgrades that I should be thinking of doing? I haven't found a snorkel kit yet for the 2015 4Runner.

Suggestions and comments will be greatly appreciated.

From what I have seen on bumpers for the 14+, the piece that says Toyota will be removed since it's part of the lower bumper. Also with all that weight you are likely going to want to upgrade your suspension... I hope you love that orange color because that's going to end up being the only thing left from the "pro upgrade"

I don't see any listings on the HeftyFabWorks website for a Toyota 4Runner 5th gen. Do they make things that aren't on the website?

As for Aluminum, the only problem I see with aluminum is it can not be bent many times without breaking, due to the way it is formed and bent under fabrication. You can't bend it back if it gets bent. You can with steel. If you have any doubts about this find something in aluminum and bend it a few times until it breaks. It is lighter though.
 
Congrats on your new ride! I wouldn't have a problem with aluminum bumpers, but you are definitely going to want steel sliders. You want something that the entire weight of the vehicle is going to be on to take a beating. Aluminum, as previously stated, isn't going to be up to the task time and time again.

Having to deal with rust on sliders is just the price of admission for wheeling.

I will be interested in buying your black "TOYOTA" trim piece (the black cover together with the letters), it is just "taped" on, so if you careful, you should be able to remove it without issue.

Please let me know when you are removing it.

Yes, HeftyFabWorks does make items for the 5th gen 4Runner, but their website is definitely not the place to find them. You can find a number of photos of 5th gen 4Runners with their mods on them on their facebook page. They haven't done one of the newer 2014/2015 bumpers yet though, so if they don't get to it before I order they are going to use mine for the mockup.

Have fun. Love mine! The paint is amazing when all shined up.

For the money stick with steel. Not that much weight and loads more durable. You can keep your front skid plate. I know I just Order RCI skid plates and was told that they are going to have a filler soon for our front plate.

I also did the schroxworks sliders. It was between then and Bud Built in the end the more step type won out over the wife.

Though ai personally dont want to go the route of a new front bumper, especially since I wont be wheeling like mad and dont want to loose the aggresisve look of the TRD bumper. i am going to go with a hidden winch that integrats with the factory front bumper. Just need a month to recooperate from all the little mods I have done and what I have on order, plus gun stuff.

About to put on the Gobi you wont be dissapointed.

I have my Gobi on order so will hopefully get that with a month or so. I've been reviewing some of the paint protection options, but am still up in the air about it. I'm not sure if it is worth doing if I'm going to get it all scratched up in Moab etc. The more I think about the front bumper, the more and more I am kind of steering in the direction that you are going as well. I probably won't go with a hidden winch, but I may go for one of the "half" bumpers that I have seen that basically cover only the center section of the bumper.

Are you having them install the Gobi Rack? They are right down the road and installed it within an hour. I talked to them on a regular basis to customize it and they were pretty great. I ended up getting it in about 3 weeks.

I ordered mine through the group buy on the forum here, so not getting it directly through them. I guess I can check to see if they will do the install though. Thanks for the idea! I did see on another thread that someone switched off of a Gobi Ranger to a Baja because they were getting excessive wind noise from the Gobi. Have you experienced this? Do you have the Stealth or the Ranger? I ordered the Stealth.

I did not order from Gobi directly either but they will install for free either way and not charge you shipping. You should definitely take them up on this.

As far as wind noise, yes there is some. Is it noticeable? for the first few weeks it is but then it just sounds like normal road noise. I can't tell the difference anymore. I actually get more wind noise from the side mirrors whistling than the rack itself. I have the stealth.

I believe Jake has the Baja (don't quote me) but said they are a lot more prone to damage and what not while standing on top. The Gobi rack is by far the best quality of rack you can buy and it looks better.
