Diesel discussions are flammable topics on internet boards, not to mention how far off the OT we are, but getting a true 20mpg with any sort of programmer and the emissions equipment intact and functioning is pretty tough. The dash gauges get notoriously screwy after adding performance tunes. More power = more fuel = less mpg.
Not trying to start an argument or challenging you, just seems awfully tough on a modern diesel. But if your happy with your setup and are getting good mileage that's all that matters

Glad you're happy with you Runner! It's not as bad as the rest of this thread would make it out to be... On the internet, there are 2 rules: the grass is ALWAYS greener somewhere else and the laws of physics do not apply.

Having left the v8 4R for the 15' this month, the difference in power and response is significant. That will take some getting used to.
The entire new SR5 4R is much nicer in many ways than my 06' Sport, regardless of missing the V8, however in two ways it's not, engine power and no XREAS.
That said its still a brilliant platform.

Right, my 06' Sport v8 had the XREAS and frankly I had no idea how well it worked until I drove the 15' SR5 around sharp highway connector ramps. Difference of 15-20 MPH in speed around / through corners.
Probably no substitute for the XREAS. I am thinking of the Fox kit front and rear, I really don't want to lift it, or not by much, so I have to talk to some install folks, esp about the need for the upper control arms with the Fox kit. Issues for another thread.
6.0 is probably the worst gas or diesel fuel engine ever!

Lol, had my '04 6.0 F350 for 10 years before selling and picking up my new 4Runner. Great truck, drove daily, hauled anything I ever tried with power to spare. It liked to rev a lot more than my previous 7.3, was a lot of fun to drive.
Having said that, went through 2 head gaskets/stretched head bolts, 8 injectors, blown egr cooler in 125k miles ha
4Runner's 4.0 was a pleasant surprise. I'm sure towing it will struggle more than I'm used to but daily driving it's great.
My first impressions - 2015 TE with KDSS corners GREAT, but dives hard under straight line braking. Truck generally seems a little "heavy" with the V6 but I am also babying it still during break in. Mine will probably drive a little better once I am less stingy with the gas, but I expect to drop into the solid 17 MPG range if I force the right foot more (currently in 18s, 1st tank of gas was in 19s). I have never driven an older one with a V8 but will bet that would be sweet.
17 MPG city? I hate to be skeptical, but... The wifes LE is doing about 13 city. My Rover LR3 V8 gets better mileage when I'm careful. I can get close to 16 MPG city. We have a 1000' climb to our house from almost anywhere we go. That eats some MPG.
And I agree with others. I'd call the V6 adequate for the truck, no more. They could do more tuning with the intake and exhaust to make it sound better. Not sure I would bother.
As somebody else said, it's a "brilliant platform." Complaining about the V6 is nit-picking to me. Overall the truck is so good I don't even notice it.
I also have an LE (2014) and routinely get 16-18 in the city. I have third row and running boards, so my truck is on the heavier side. Does your wife's really get only 13mpg? Is she drag racing or what?

Not overly heavy footed - perhaps a little faster than most. I'll repeat this: we have a 1000' climb almost every time we go anywhere. Getting up those hills at speed eats a lot of fuel.
Actually, this is wrong: we have a 1000' elevation change. We likely have a 1500' climb every time we go anywhere. I'll check her truck next time I'm in it to be sure on the number.

Ring and pinion break in.
That makes more sense then, the elevation change will definitely impact efficiency. But keep in mind that you also get the benefit from rolling down 1500' every time you go the other way.

Just came across this thread.
Just to the first 10 posts. I'm driving a 2014 Ecoboost F150 mostly with empty bed with mostly freeway mile (company issued vehicle) and the best MPG I got was 17 MPG but generally my average is 15.3 MPG. And before this I drove a 2014 Dodge 2500 Hemi (the gas version) for two months which was a rental car a my average was 15 MPG.
Now the 2014 TE 4Runner, if I drive I get 17 city and 20 freeway, and If my wife drives, she gets 15 city and 18 freeway.
Got both truck brand new and took care of both.Actually got the Ford exactly 2 days after the 4Runner.
So long story short I have concluded that even though the 4Runner is not the most efficient vehicle, but when you put those 1/2 tone and 3/4 ton trucks in two work, they become real gas guzzler.
