2016/2017 Wheels and arrival dates for '17s

Hi Everyone,

I have a Limited 4Runner on order, and am wanting a new set of wheels. The dealer tells me they are unsure, since I just ordered it Monday of last week, if it'll be a '16 or '17, nor do they have an idea when it'll arrive since the plant may be on hiatus until the '17s start to roll out Post-January 2017. In other words, they have no clue what to tell me.

I was planning to order a set of the KMC XD Rockstars (XD775) for my new ride, but concerned they won't fit if they change from '16 to '17. The way I understand it is the '17s will be almost exactly the same as the '16s, but I'm still hesitant to ordering the wheels until I know for sure (or someone online here can tell me for sure if the info I have is accurate or not). Pardon me for my hesitancy, but I don't want a $1k set of wheels that wont fit on my '17 (or for that matter '16) Limited. I could always put them on my wifes '16 T4R SR5, but I don't think she'd appreciate me 'forcing' her into a set of wheels she didn't ask for.

So, the questions (in a nutshell) are these:

a) any idea if, ordering this time of year, will net me a '16 or '17?
b) how long is it taking these days for a new 'dealer preference' to be approved and the 4Runner delivered.
c) If the wheels I want will fit a '17, thus stating that, indeed, the 17's will be an exclusive carry-over from the 16's.
d) the research I've done is that, even though the Limited has 20" wheels, most folks put 17" on there for better/larger tires, is that accurate?

Just went through this yesterday. Was told order banks open up first week of November, so next week. He said right now, if we wait till next week there is a crossover and they will be able to order 16' and '17's...and 16's will be build through the next month and into September, so we bought a '16 as I'm not waiting until end of February to just order the same exact Runner....


The dealer had zero information on options, colors, ect. His best guess was just cosmetic changes but nothing concrete. Hope that helps.

b) Stories I've read have varied. Some say a couple weeks. Some say a couple months. Guess this question will truly depend on the real answer to A
c) It has been discussed ad nauseam on here, and has been confirmed by Toyota, that the 2017 is a direct carry-over from 16. Only real differences will be trim naming (TRD Off-Road vs Trail) Also, 4R wheels are interchangeable from 03-on. (could be further back than that...)
d) There are far more options for tires on a 17" wheel in terms of width and tread pattern.

Yikes, February...really? Wow, by then my loan won't be valid and I'd have to go through the loan process approval with my credit union all over again (including pulling credit again). In other words, if your dealer is correct, if I don't have it in a month I'm screwed until February. Crud...

I really want a N. Blue Limited with Beige interior and the rear cargo tray, and don't want to settle on my 2nd or 3rd color choice if I'm going to pay that kind of money for one of these machines. I think the black is also a great color, I just have a preference. So, now I have no clue about the wheels, and won't get the 4R until next year...LOLOL. "Help me, Obi-Wan".

Don't settle, it's a 40k vehicle, get it exactly how you want. I like to tinker and change things so a Pro wasn't of interest. My wife insisted on a sunroof as well, so we both liked white and Barcelona red (her Camry is that color) and white was choice one. Wasn't sure on kdss but read enough about to push us towards it. Point is...even if you have wait, get what you want. That info is what my local dealer told me, maybe your build time would be different...

Careful with the XD wheels, several models come with a minimum width of 9 inches. Mine are 17x9 and it limits your tire choices unless you are going to get it lifted. I wanted the BF Goodrich KO2s but they max out at 17x8.5 for LT265/70R17. Had to go with a p-rated Kumho At51 instead.

I completely agree with getting what you want and can afford. I love the idea of a brand new Limited, on the other hand if I dont want to wait I can move on a 13-15 GX460, Certified with less than 22k miles, for the same money. V8 is alluring...I could CARE LESS about mileage, I care about durability and comfort...V8s are typically better suited for durability IMO, but that 4.0L is a beast as well when it comes to longevity. The swinging back door doesnt bother me. I travel 2,500 miles/month currently, so I want something that'll last, and a lightly used GX or brand new Limited would surely last for the long haul.

Waiting for an uncertainty stinks. I love the 5th gen, my wife has one, and surely would love to get into something other than my Avalon, I REALLY, REALLY need the room to haul crap (and the Seq and L/C aren't options).

Even if you have to wait so you can get what you want... wait. 2nd and 3rd choice are the same as the "but" eraser used in a sentence... I really do like this red one, but it is red... everything prior to "but" is a falsehood. Took me six months, but eventually the vehicle came across the ocean and now I love driving it and figuring out the next mods. Interior LED light package showed up today... Have fun man and enjoy that vehicle!

from all indication - no change in wheel size from '16 to '17. But you can always wait to get 4R before ordering wheels!

The highlander for this year got a new face, 8 speed and a refresh. I wouldn't mind a bit more power

Speculating and waiting....my dealer said he doesn't know what's coming, but he doesn't thinkg it's a major change...

a turbo inline 6 or the 5.7 would be nice, but those arent going to happen. probably will be the 3.5 doodoo trash out of the new taco

Daydreaming is fun...

What if they did the 3.5 doodoo trash from the Tacoma with ~300 hp and 300 lb ft. and an 8 speed....plus blind spot, plus rear cross traffic.

That'd be cool with me. Slap on some TRD wheels and proper tires and I'm mall cruising and class 6 road rolling for days

Devildog, no clue on the '16 or '17 but I'm adding a couple pics of my '16 limited with XD rims to maybe assist you on your decision. I replaced mine around 250 miles or so and went with 20", -12 offset to bump them out a bit for a wider stance.
I love the look and ride, but to do this over again I would have gone with 17 or 18" rims. Pushing the tires out caused them to rub a good bit on the front fender liner as well as the mudflap which didn't surprise me.
I did a 2.5/1.5 leveling kit and used a heat gun to mold fender liner and mudflap to prevent rubbing. The leveling kit was in my plans anyway, but was basically a must after I put the rims on. It's mostly on the pavement minus some hunting and fishing, but by no means do I need a real lift for my purposes.
Just wanted to provide you with some additional info before you make the plunge on rims and tires, hope it helps!
