2016 4Runner Nav bypass

Summary of how my iPhone is now connected:
1) I'm still activating and connecting via Bluetooth, so I suspect that my iPhone (Phone voice/text functionality) is connected via Bluetooth because the hands-free voice calling and touch-screen functionality still work via the 4Runner stereo/Nav system. I don't think either would function if it was utilizing the lightning/USB interface.
2) Streaming music (Sirius/XM, Pandora, Spotify) apps are running on my iPhone, but it is interfacing using the A/V audio input to the 4Runner. All controls are done via the iPhone, not the touch-screen on the 4Runner.
3) Waze app is running on my iPhone and interfacing using the A/V audio input on the 4Runner. All controls are done via the iPhone, not the touch screen on the 4Runner. (FYI - you can stream two audios over the USB input using A/V at the same time.)

When I get into the 4Runner, my iPhone automatically pairs via Bluetooth. I then launch the music app on my phone, then I launch Waze and display it widescreen. I then connect the CRUX AVITY-01. Then hold the up button on the steering wheel control and select A/V.

At this point, I see Waze being displayed on my Nav screen, hear my music and can call/receive calls using full functionality of the 4Runner (voice & touch screen). The music takes precedent, unless Waze sends an audio alert (which is at a higher volume than the streaming music.) If I get a call or send a call, it takes precedence over the music too.

I have yet to have any Bluetooth issues since I installed the AVITY-01.

Curiosity got to me... so I tried Bluetooth everything again... iPhone, music, Waze. As soon as Waze gave me a warning over the music... my Bluetooth dropped because it gets confused between the Waze app and an actual call via the iPhone. The good thing was that because AVITY-01 enables full Navigation/Setup controls while moving, you simply go to Settings-->Bluetooth-->Connect and your Bluetooth is reconnected without having to stop the vehicle. As an FYI - Before I installed the AVITY-01, the "connect" menu item was disabled in a moving vehicle... so I would have to stop to get the "connect" menu item available. I'm very happy that I don't have to deal with the ridiculous stop/start issue anymore (especially on long trips where I'd have to stop on the side of the road to "re-connect Bluetooth" to maintain both hands-free phone and Waze functionality.)

any big negatives about getting the bypass? it's really annoying having to stop when im on the road because i have to input a location
 
Let me start by saying again that the negatives only exist because of Toyota's system design. They could do a lot to 'undo' this with updated Entune software.

Now having said that, here is what I perceive as the negatives:
1. Cost (albeit I do think the value is fair -they solve a problem better & more easily than any other aftermarket solution)
2. Additional cost (You also need to buy a ""Lightning cable to HDMI adapter)
3. Clutter wires (the white adapter harness is large... and I will be hiding it eventually in my glove box)
4. Additional work to install (both the original unit and additional "12V socket" that I will be installing in the globe box per #3)

Could you post a quick video of the controllability of waze with the crux adaptor?
I thought I saw a video online of showed when the phone changed apps (got a text or something) the waze would leave the head unit display. I just want to make sure that once waze is up on the screen, it is running all the time even if the passenger uses email or safari etc.

Wanted to give an update. While I don't have a video to link, when you switch applications and you have the video display enabled, it will show your phone screen. It basically outputs the image/video of whatever is on your phone.

Also, I just completed a 1500 mile drive... plenty of time to play with iPhone & the CRUX interface. I stream Amazon music and run Waze at the same time. The sound and sound overlay work fine, but remember that the image from your iPhone is pushed to the AV input the Nav system... so you see the same thing on both the Toyota screen and your phone.

I am looking for video in motion as well as navi control in motion. Basically where it can mirror your IPhone screen for Waze or entertainment. Which unit would cover both these areas?

Just did video on motion on my buddies 17 Yukon Denali. It was simple but expensive but very very effective. Below is video playing from his phone.

Yes, thread resurrection.

Just came from a 3rd gen Tacoma to a 5th gen 4Runner.

On the Tacoma, you can disable the nav lockout nanny by simply clipping a wire on the head unit ribbon cable.

Anyone explore that possibility for the 4Runner?

The kit is for connecting AV inputs, but I used an HDMI splitter instead. I can mirror my phone, play my Nintendo or just flip the bypass switch if I need to use the screen while driving.
 
Glad you're happy with your AV work, but all I'm looking for is the ability to enter destinations into the nav while in motion.

On the taco, it was just the simple clipping of a wire. No other side effects other than the nav not knowing the vehicle was in motion. Easy.

This bypass allows you to do that still. The switch (in the second post that I linked) is the VIM bypass. You can enter an address, check your maintenance, etc as the vehicle is in motion. It just had the added benefits that I was looking to add.
 
There is info on my site on how to build your own nav bypass as well as video on Nav screen. When i sold these we had numerous successful installations up thru 2014 year 4Runner. So not 100% sure if 2015-2019 is any different or not. I also have other mods for the factory nav screen such as the anytime backup camera mod and blind spot monitor mod. Write up is specific to the 4G but hope you can get some insight to do similar to your year/model.
