I bought an used 2016 Limited. Someone ripped out original DVD player that was installed there and dealer, just to cover cut-out in the headliner, put a piece of crap DVD player and did not wired it correctly. Instead of spending $2700 on a new headliner I decided to just get a monitor for kids which is not a bad idea after all for those long trips. Otherwise they keep staring into their phones..
I was able to find what I was looking for, thanks to some guys on this forum that tried to connect additional lights. I will try to take couple pictures when I'm completely done because Im still heaving some problems with a door trigger wire. Maybe someone will have the same problem trying to cover a big hole in the headliner and this solution is helpful.
Okay, ...think I gotcha!
If the DVD/CD player was dealer installed (most likely is), then I know I'm not gonna have the wiring schemes in my library for it. But you can still test each wire e.g., IGN
HOT, GND wire... Please remember that our 4Runners are ALL
'Ground-side-switching' circuitry, which means it works the opposite from the cars/trucks of yesterday; the load (lights, fan, wiper motor...etc) is
ALWAYS energized, and the switch connects the powered device to a ground source to complete the circuit!
So the
HOT wire comes directly from the ign switch power source (Driver-side fusebox), and connects to the DVD's
POS input terminal. The device's power switch
(USUALLY) gets connected to the GND wire... but be sure to test the wires for their operation because we don't know if the installer followed the factory's wiring protocol!
Use a volt meter to test the wires for 12V HOT (connect the black lead to any un-painted metal body part). If one wire is HOT, keep it connected to your meter lead and reconnect the black lead to the other wires... "one at a time" until you see 12V's; there's your GND wire! Hope this helps,
