2016 Tacoma V6 Specs: 270hp/261lb-ft

I've been closely watching the reveal of the new Tacoma looking for clues on what we might get with the 6th gen 4Runner, and let me say that I hope the new motor is not something that makes the jump (at least without some modification).

2016 Tacoma V6 Specs:

The Tacoma has made less power than the 4Runner for some time now (236 hp/266lb-ft this generation, vs 270/278 for 4Runner), so hopefully the next generation 4Runner will also get a power bump.

Just sharing for those who might have been curious, as I know these two vehicles have a lot in common.

So it makes a bit less torque and at a higher RPM than the single AND dual VVTi 1GR variants if I'm not mistaken? Great upgrade, especially with Toyota's discontinuation of the supercharger program. :fish:

It's probably a nice upgrade from the current motor when combined with the 6 speed. Take a spin in an RX350 that has roughly the same weight, engine, and gearing with the 6 speed and it feels like it has great power. If they hit the gearing/tune right I think it's going to be plenty of power.

Hopefully the 4runner keeps the 4.0L and jumps a similar 30hp.

What worries me is many Colorado owners/drivers noting that GM mostly dropped a sedan engine into a truck and called it a day. The 3.6L seems to be peaky, not torquey enough and not particularly good for towing. This new 3.5L is a pretty new animal and seeing torque go down and peak RPMs go up is not promising, and I hope we don't hear people saying, "Toyota put the Camry engine in the Tacoma."

While Toyota's truck motors have always been somewhat short on power on paper, the gearing has often made them seem quicker than what they really are. I personally hope that gearing is right for this truck, and that MPG significantly increases.

A lot of people were hoping for 295-305hp and 275-290lb-ft of torque, but they've come up a bit short of those numbers.

It is only the 80s over again at Toyota. The other manufacturers figured it out.
300-over 400 horsepower is readily available in pickup trucks and suv and many get the same mpg we do.

For a 2016 model year vehicle with "new engine", 270/261 is pretty disappointing to me.

If you think about it, 2005 Frontier/Pathfinder had a 3.5L V6 with 266hp and 288 lb-ft of torque. That was ELEVEN model years ago.

I love Toyota and know power isn't everything in one of these rigs, but it's a little frustrating to look at these numbers and try to be excited. Obviously, we've got a while longer to wait before we see what they will slide under the hood of the next gen 4Runner.

6th gen with some weight loss and 300hp would be great, but a lot of people were expecting that "300hp" for the Tacoma and look what we got. :shocked:

I just hope the MPG ends up being redeeming.

Maybe they'll have an 8AT to mate to this engine by the time the 6th gen 4R debuts?

Somewhat agree on this. Toyota has gotten way too soft and will probably start to loose market share soon. Beating the reliability drum won't last forever as everyone else is making great progress.

They need new blood in their conservative ways. So many exciting vehicles coming out and Toyota just continues to be ultra boring at the core.

Why you guys buy Toyotas is beyond me. Go buy those "powerhouses" you speak of and enjoy! Oh wait... you say you would if they had the reliability, durability and residual value of Toyota? Hey, Toyota has a vehicle that fits every single one of your needs and it's called a Land Cruiser. Don't want to pony up the $85K that is a fair value to get the performance and reliability? Would rather ***** and moan about why they don't make a POS with lots of power and efficiency and terrible reliability? Geez guys, when will you realize that to get what you all want (power, efficiency, reliability, comfort, lots of tech and off road ability) it's gonna cost a lot of money and there are only a few vehicles out there that qualify. I guess it's easier to sit back and whine about it though. Carry on.

Too bad the interior of a URJ200 is piss poor at that price. I can understand if they are aiming for a basic and utilitarian interior, but they are trying to call it luxurious. The overall vehicle feels overpriced.

Side note, that 4.5 twin turbo diesel they dropped in it overseas is awesome. Even better was the 4.8L Nissan Patrol with its beefy drivetrain. I think the only solution is to move overseas....

I assume you are talking about the F150 with this. Aluminum body panels on the F150. The frame is still steel.

We (most here in this forum) are enthusiasts right? Unfortunately the sum total of us make up a pimple on the flea's ass that is sitting on the dog riding an elephant that is Toyota. The majority of Toyota's (and everyone else's customers) want the economy. They want the boredom. They want sameness. Look at paint colors for example: Top automobile colors are white, black and silver with gray running a close loser fourth. Boring. Why? Because the masses want it that's why. The 99.9% that overrides our 0.1%.

Toyota offers the 4Runner as a niche player. Actually it sells more 4Runner units than Camaro and Mustang but for Toyota it is a niche market. Just having a vehicle like this that is not a cookie cutter CUV is pretty cool, yet you guys want it to be more "niche-er" and have a smaller market?

I think the point is clear. They are falling behind. More so now than ever. Domestics are coming back swinging full force and now that oil is in the shits Toyota remains content to sit on its ass. Good luck with that business model.

Don't get me wrong... I have been a loyal Toyota owner from a a 97 supra twin turbo to 2000 4Runner sport edition, to a 07 FJ, 10 SR5, and now this... I get it.

The problem is... The masses are moving market share elsewhere and Toyota is taking it on the chin while sitting on their asses.

The 4Runner is already a dinosaur... With as you say a niche market. I will modify this ***** to how I see fit and eventually trade it in / benefit from its high residual value... or I will drive it into the dirt. There is a high likelihood that my next car will not be a Toyota... And strangely, I am perfectly fine with that idea.

Lets face is the Japanese car manufacturers are boring these days! I actually love going to Japan, its a fun place to go for vacation. In the workplace the Japanese are very conservative and typically do not want to stir up anything that would give them negative attention from their peers. A Japanese worker will never disagree with his/her boss even if the boss is wrong. Go to japan and 100% of business men dress the same. White business shirt and black plants.

But after work, they go to an Izakaya at 9-10pm and the business men are drinking alcohol getting rowdy and having a good time of their life. 2 different people Japanese are. True story as I have been to Japan 5 times now.

Even in the sports car world the Japanese have no fun sport type of car today except for the GTR.

No more Acura Integra GSR (i used to own on long long time ago). Fun car that reved to 8,000 RPM
No more Acura RSX Type S
No more Honda S2000
No more Toyota Celica's
No more Acura NSX
No more Toyota Supra. This car was iconic.

All those cars were fun to drive and car enthusiasts owned them.

Today all we get is Camrys, Viennas, Pruises from Japanese manufacturers. The Toyota FR-S was a huge disappointment to me. Its pretty sad because the Japanese have a great potential to make a really good affordable sports car!

That is why I purchased my BMW M3 (recently sold it) for pure driving pleasure and keep I a conservative Japanese car as a daily driver. If I want to buy something fun and thrilling I have to go to the European car manufactures for that. They seem to take more risk than the Japanese.

I currently am on the waiting list for a BMW M2. I wish Toyota/Honda came out with a RWD performance car!
