2016 TEP with humming noise

This is my second 5th gen trail, first was a 2014 TEP and I loved that truck. My favorite feature was the information screen above the radio and they deleted that on my 16...

I bought my 16 brand new and I have 14,500 miles on it. While driving yesterday I could hear and feel a humm coming from the front of the drivetrain under the driver floor board. I especially hear and feel it between 40-60 mph when I let off the gas and coast. It's almost like the 4 wheel drive is engaged and I can assure it's not. Any thought? I have an appointment today for the 15k service and I'm going to have them look at it.

Also, anybody had issues with the navigation unit just turning off and restarting while driving???

Make sure you know how to repeat the problem, and that you ride along. Being there helps the tech's hearing a lot.

My navigation did that for a short time, it was a ground issue. But there have been others to mention this, check out below, could be related to your issue.

There is a TSB out for that noise. Its a bearing that gets replaced in the front diff. Noise goes away when 4WD is engaged. Take it in to the dealer. Its a pretty easy fix takes about 2 hours start to finish

Awesome, I will wait to see what they tell me before I tell them to look at this TSB. If they can't figure it out I will let them know about the TSB.

Tech stated he was familiar with the nav unit turning off while driving. Said he thought it would be fixed in the next update.

I'm assuming you mean the needle bearing? I complained about mine at my 5k mile service (although I don't notice it now). Do you have a link or any other inof about the TSB?

in 4WD. This noise can be addressed by replacing the needle bearing on the left side of the front

I know it doesn't mention the 16 but it will be the same thing. They most likely haven't had enough 16 models do it yet to include it in the TSB. I hope this helps

I could be wrong, but I don't think you have to be within the OEM wty for a TSB fix. I know a lot of the propshaft clunks got fixed past the oem wty.

a TSB is just designed to help a tech about a known issue that's not a recall or a warranty enhancement. Some go above and beyond the warranty period. This one however is 5/60 only.

I went ahead and called the service department and gave them the TSB number mentioned in the thread. I would rather they know now then have my truck all day. Service guy probably didn't even write it down...We shall see.

Man I love this forum.... I JUST started noticing this “hum” as well within the last couple of months. I swear I thought I was imagining it, it’s almost so slight. But reading this, this HAS to be it. I remember thinking to myself a few days ago the EXACT thought of “hmm, almost sounds/feels like the 4WD is engaged, but I know it’s not”.

NAV is acting up again, so I’ll make an appointment for both items. Will keep everyone posted on outcome(s).

i can almost reproduce it on command: operate in 4WD for a bit, then after driving in 2WD again let off the gas or brake lightly to decelerate through ~30mph, it helps if you are decelerating downhill or using some engine braking

On mine its always at about 50mph and about 30mph after operating in 4WD for a bit.

Well the tech said they read the tsb but it doesn't list the 2016 as being affected by it .....so they are looking for other causes... I just laughed and said it probably hasn't been reported yet for the 16s but it's the same issue. If it walks like a duck..

I think I have this issue too. Noticed the issue a around the time I had K02's installed and figured it might have been them. Put it into 4WD and the vibration is gone! Too bad, just had the 15K service done on my 16 TEP.
