2016 Throttle Body went out …..

…… on my friend’s SR5 4Runner after a long road trip, with only 50k miles on the truck.
Has anyone had this happen? When I did a search I couldn’t find anything that this was a known issue, and it really surprised me— and her.
She’s re thinking whether to hold onto her Toyota long term over this.

Any input/advice would be really appreciated.

2016 SR5 — not sure if it’s a premium.
About 50k miles.
No extended warranty

Not sure what code came up, but the engine light went on, and the car basically idled and wouldn’t respond to throttle input from what she said.
The guy who picked up her truck in the middle of nowhere told her he’s seen this with Toyota’s (specifically, throttle bodies going out), and he ended up being right: it was the throttle body.

went out meaning??? Have you tried cleaning it, fairly simple.

Something may have thrown a code and sent it into limp mode.
It would need to be read by someone that is qualified to pin it down.
It may be the the TB, but may be something else.
Don’t just change parts!

Is there a sprintbooster or a pedal commander on the 4Runner?

They already replaced it for her — it was up in South Dakota somewhere.
They told her it was definitely something electronic that went bad ….. so it wasn’t just a matter of cleaning out the fuel injection system.
I was just curious if this (electronic issues involving the FI system/throttle bodies going out) was something other 4Runner owners have reported. I couldn’t find anything on it

It’s an electric motor that operates the butterfly, and a sensor that reports TB position. You can read the position on a scanner such as a ScanGauge, even with the engine not running.
Expensive part but easy to replace.

Would be nice to be able to investigate what went wrong.
If it was common we probably would have heard about it once or twice. Shit happens.

Depending on the technician, I would wonder if this had a connection to it, especially if she had no other issues prior.

This issue has been reported 3 times on this forum in 2013 and 2015. It's rare. I found posts using this Google search, "5th generation 4runner throttle body issue limp mode" These posts include DTC values and a 2011 TSB.

In the second post, ECM was replaced twice and issue was not resolved. Eventually vehicle was fixed when the throttle body was replaced.

When a part is expensive and not covered under warranty, one may always ask for the old part and hold it to confirm the repair. It the repair is not successful, then the diagnostic was a guess and the shop should reinstall the old part and refund the cost. If the repair is successful, then on a part such as this, it would be interesting to test and disassemble to try and figure out what failed.

That's really unfortunate that that happened it does sound like it's rare though I don't think it's a reason to sell the car but to each their own.

This happened to me when we first got our 4runner. I picked it up from a dealership about 5 hours from my house and the dealership was closing as I left. I stopped to get something to eat and, as the car was running while I was parked, the engine died and I had a check engine light. I turned the key to the off position and started it back up and everything seemed fine except for an ugly check engine light staring back at me. I drove it all the way home without any issues. The next day I pulled the code (P2111). I cleared the code and it seemed fine for a few days until the engine died again. This time it happened while I was driving in traffic about an hour from home. I was able to limp it into a parking lot and I had my scan tool in the glove box so I was able clear the code and drive it home. I brought it into the dealership right away and they replaced the throttle body. I bought the 4runner with a CPO warranty so it was covered. I asked the service manager if this was a common thing and he told me that it wasn't. It's been almost 2 years and 20,000 miles and I haven't had any other issues.

No mods on mine and it had just been picked up from the dealer with a CPO warranty so I'm assuming the 4runner had a thorough inspection before I bought it. In my case, it seemed like it was just a random failure that probably couldn't have been prevented.

I've owned 7 Toyotas, 4 of them 4Runners, and have tallied well over 1 million miles and NEVER had a TB issue other than having to clean sticky linkages.

Considering that Toyota is about as bullet proof as you can get, I'd shrug off the occasional/unusual failure and move on.
