2017 T4R TRDP Brake Failure

Good news is I didn't hit anything, but just experienced a substantial loss in braking. Going approximately 30 MPH and coming to normal stop. Heard a loud pop from engine compartment and immediately lost majority of brakes. Had to pump pedal rapidly getting some pedal back and brakes. Again, fortunately know-one in front of me. I checked out system and no leaks any where. Did a couple of test stops in parking area and no ABS. I can pump the brakes to get some brake contact, but it will not hold as it immediately fades.

THoughts-suggestions? I've already contacted dealer requesting flatbed service and loaner.

Plot thickens. Vehicle at dealer. Everyone scratching there heads. No codes, no warning lights, no cut lines, no brakes. This will be interesting
 
So our brakes are going to go out and Takata airbags explode? I like living my life on the edge. Makes my work commute a bit more interesting.

So far my '17 TRD OR has not had either issue.
 
Yea, this problem is showing up with significant frequency... I think it's time for this to get wider attention from somewhere.
 
am i correct in thinking this is only happening to 4runners with crawl control? i only remember seeing this issue mentioned about the pros but now an offroad as well.

Happy to report since Toyota replaced my entire brake system in December, no further issues with my T4R. However, concerning that we continue hearing of these issues and crickets from NTSB and Toyota.

Hm, hope this doesn't turn into a Takata airbags-like situation. Good to hear you haven't had any issues since thouh.
 
Bumping this to ask those of you who experienced this to please report it to NHTSA, even if Toyota replaced parts. Nobody knows what's causing this, nor do we know if Toyota's solution will actually prevent it from occurring again. FWIW, it looks like zero of you reported this problem! I hope to keep the 4runner for a very long time without worrying about brake failure, so please, do all of us a favor.

NHTSA recently opened an investigation of F-150's catching fire from seat belt tensioners (the domestics always seem to find interesting ways to start fires). This was from only five reports on a vehicle that sells over 750,000 each year. Lets get this problem acknowledged.

This isnt the first brake failure ive heard about...Ive actually read of several on FB too which is not good at all, hoping they are looking into this further...
 
Great! Im about to drive 400 miles tomorrow going 80+ mph and i read this the night prior[emoji53] lol. But actually though, hopefully they find a solution/ reason for this. Definitely a safety concern!

That's pretty much why I posted a plea for those who experienced this problem to file a report with NHTSA. It serves all of us (potentially saving lives). At the very least, most of us bought a 4Runner because we placed value on peace of mind (reliability, simple, capable of getting you home in snow, etc.). This might be a very rare problem, but we have to acknowledge that it could happen to any of us. And that means Toyota's unacknowledged problem is keeping us from getting the full value of that peace of mind.

Nothing about that other guys story made sense, and every thread of theirs was them complaining about some other failure that didn't make sense

I am the OP and filed two reports with the NHTSA. Received an acknowledgement but nothing further. Good news is no further issues since Toyota replaced the brake unit.
 
Wondering if you ever figured out what the issue was? I am having the same issue on my 2020 with 5,000 miles on it and dealer is trying to send the car home saying nothing is wrong. I reported it to the NHTSA as well. Pretty concerning to hear I am not the only one with he same unresolved issue on the forum.
