2017 TRD Off Road Broken Wheel Stud

Hi guys,

Just had my aftermarket wheels and tires installed a few days ago and one of the studs on the right front broken broke in half... Truck has roughly 1,600kms (1,000mi) on it and wheels have come off probably 4-5 times for things here and there. But a broken stud? No threads seem to be stretched when looking at it either. Went to torque the studs to 85tq and the one just kept spinning more than I would have thought. I stopped, backed it off and inspected it looked ok so I tried again and boom it broke. I am definitely not happy about this and think that these stock studs are junk. Does anyone have any recommendations/experience with this? I have one new stud sitting in my truck but the more I think about it the more I want to replace all the studs on the front (left and right) while I am at it. Let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks, Mike.

On my '16, the tire shop broke two of my studs when I had the wheels changed. They were using an impact like they do on all the other vehicles that come in. They replaced them free of charge, but did say that they appeared to be weak(er) than normal.

A lot of hardcore use on these rigs has been documented here but personally I haven't seen a pattern of this. I'd say replace the one and move on.

Somebody overtorqued them at some point or you rolled with them too loose. They will often stretch before they break so I would inspect all studs and replace any that appear stretched or damaged in any way. Going forward make sure when tightening them down they are hand tightened and verified with a torque wrench.

Have few questions: 1) Did you get the correct lug nuts for your custom rims? 2) Were you able to achieve at least 6-7 full turns with your lug nuts? 3) Did the installer use the impact wrench torqued to 200 lb-ft then manually torqued at 85 lb-ft? #3 happened to me once and now that I have an extra wheelset for every car I own, I just do the rotation work myself. If I need new tires, I just take my wheelset to the DT and have them change them. My guess is that you got shafted by #3. I replaced all 20 lug nuts on my 2007 Camry when #3 happened. Luckily the job wasn't too hard.
